First off, when you are being interrogated DO NOT admit to anything, say "No comment." Even when the police are out of the room don't say anything incriminating, for they are listening in the nest room. Don't say anything incriminating anywhere in the station or on the phone in the station, the whole place is bugged, and under surveliance.

Second, you can refuse mugshots, but this only works as long as ylou don't have an I.D or Drivers Liscense: They can pull those up on their computer.

Third, you can refuse to give finger prints if you are being retained without being arrested, just tell them " Your going to have to apply for a warrant--I refuse to give my fingerprints."

Fourth, you're entitled to make phone calls, they just wont let you, so keep demanding them.

First off, when you are being interrogated DO NOT admit to anything, say "No comment."

But do not use that exact words. Vary: say, "I don't want to speak", "I'm only going to speak in the presence of a lawyer", "I am entitled to silence" etc. If you are going to stick to one phrase, use the one the cops themselves use when they read your rights for you.

If they ask you about people's names, though, prefer to say "I don't know him/her" or equivalent. "Who?!" is possible even preferable.

They might throw some "innocent" questions in the mid of their interrogation to confuse you. If they are about people, maintain you don't know them, unless they are common knowledge.

If they allow you to use a phone, call your lawyer first of all.

Also remember that cops in the united states are allowed by law to lie out of thier ass about anything they want. keep that in mind, i would not answer any questions no matter what they say or do, wait for your lawyer or public defender, etc..

remeber to be polite. swearing, kicking and spitting anit gonna change anyhting in the outside world and is only going to make it harder for you while you are in custody. the better you treat the cops the sooner you will be out of the station.

know your rights before you get in an arrestable situation. know what you are entilitle to and what you dont have to do. know what to expect once your've been arrested - and what you have to tell the police (name and address, any convictions etc).

carry id if you expect to get arrested - you get outta the cop shop much faster.

if you are arrestde with friends, be careful about what you say to each other. the station and the cop cars are bugged - talk about the weather

Very helpful El K, and everyone else.

http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

Make sure you know what is on that and what isn't on that.

(Although I'm not especially knowledgable on the subject, where does that apply and what governments have rejected it?)

Of course, don't say shit, I was arrested once and questioned for a while, unfortunatley they can legally hold yoou for like 12 hours in the US without charging you, so bring a pillow. ;)

Same here, and they do it all the time at demonstrations if there's even just one person who starts throwing rocks.. Never be discouraged though ;)

Making false statements to the police is illegal in the U.S., and I'd guess other countries. So if they can prove you do know those people....

Saying nothing is better if possible.

Silence is probably better than lying, indeed.

here in s'pore, the police is like shit.once me and my friends were stopped by some plainclothes bastards.then one of em said to my friend "you skinhead?".my friend replied "what skinhead?".then tt a** took him to the side and started using profanities.his superior later stopped him and tried to be 'reasonable' to us.
one thing i learnt, know your rights.and tt policemen are bastards who would love to "exercise" their 'power'(even though their pay come from the ppl themselves).but here, the constitution is such tt there's not much rights to a person.it is stated tt ppl have the right to assemble peacefully without arms.but the "law" states tt a group of 5 or more can be an 'illegal gathering'

these are more what to do in case you are caught, rather than after

carry the number of a legal observer who is present at the demonstration [either somewhere not immediately visible so the cops dont grab it off you, or written in permanant marker on your arm so they cant rub it off] so that you know who to call if you are arrested.

inform the person who takes your possessions of any meds that you need to take, so that someone is informed about it. tell as many people there as you can. when my bf got arrested the officer who was in charge of him wouldnt let him take his insulin for more than 8 hours, and he needs to take it 5 times a day.

unless you absolutely need to, don't carry anything that can be deemed a 'weapon' by the police, including pocket knives and bamboo sticks. my friends got interrogated by cops for transporting big bamboo sticks to a demo, so we ended up having to snap them in half to avoid trouble. another of my friends got busted for something like 'trying to attack a police officer with a weapon or something' simply because he was resisting arrest and later they found a small pocket knife on him. the judge didn't buy it, thankfully.

true that. The cops lied at a protest a few months ago. I got hit with disorderly conduct and probation, Fucking Pigs...

My friends also got busted a few weeks ago for not showing ID. Cops charged them with breaking a seciton of the patriot act.

I know this might sound daft, but eat anything illegal that you can. Tablets, coke, cannabis, acid.... at least in the U.K. they can realise you are off your face, but if you are clean they are unlikely to be able to do anything.

Not the best few hours ahead, but at least you are kind of inside the law. Plus they have to get you medical attention if you start to OD.

No worries :D

Seriously though, the majority of busts in my circle aren't for "political" action as such, and vandalism goes largely undetected. However ridding yourself of your stash whilst in police custody is a valuable life skill.

To emphasize...

Police will lie through their teeth when questioning. They will claim they have witnesses, video evidence, your friends' testimonies.. they will sound very convincing. I'm not talking some Law & Order crap; it is not a TV show. They will sit you down and speak to you like you're having an interview for a job, and will have papers and statements. They are good actors.
