Twelve men trapped underground since an explosion in a US mine on Monday have been found alive, reports say.
Bells at a church in the state of West Virginia where relatives had gathered rang out with the news just before midnight on Tuesday (0500GMT).

Earlier, state governor Joe Manchin said it would take nothing short of a miracle to save the men.

The news came a few hours after the body of one man was found near the site of the explosion.

Officials said the man who died, who has not yet been identified, appeared to have been dropped off in a mine car by his colleagues and was close to the explosion site.

The 12 miners are thought to been further down the mine at the time of the blast.

Toxic gas

Kay Weaver, whose brother-in-law Jack Weaver was in the mine, said family members learned of the rescue when a man burst into church, shouting: "It's a miracle, it's a miracle!".

"They told us they have 12 alive," Gov Manchin said. There is no news on their condition.

Relatives and friends cried and embraced each other at the news. Emergency vehicles and ambulances were at the scene.

There had been no communication with the men in the Sago mine since Monday morning, and there are no reports on their condition.

Television reports say the men will be reunited with their families at the church in a few hours.

Officials had expressed concern at dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide underground.

The miners had with them a day's worth of food and water supplies, and were equipped with individual air purifying systems that would give them up to seven hours of clean air, officials had said.

Mining company head Ben Hatfield said earlier that there was a chance the miners had managed to take shelter from the toxic gas levels, after their mine car was found empty.

The cause of the blast is unclear.

A pleasant surprise. :)

Not so much, after they intially reported that they were all alive, it seems that all but one of them are dead. :(

Yeah they all died but one.

This is why 24 hour net news isn't always go great -- especially when they jump to write reports based on a single staticy cell phone conversation.

Apparently there was a major communications mix up between the company and press. Still, I bet someone’s ears are burning over at the Beeb.

Just to note that there seems to be, judging from what I've seen on TV, quite a backlash amongst the families of the dead against a God who could "take away" this miracle rescue.

That should be the first step: questioning God and his pertinence. Though I'm sure that they'll just resolidify their relationship with "God" later in some deeply touching and emotional scene.

However, I believe that the families are more upset with the information agencies for giving them false hope. They're also angry at the owner of the mine since the safety of the mine has already been questioned before.

Mine had hundreds of safety violations (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-01-04-mine-violations_x.htm?POE=NEWISVA)

And despite problems at the mine, the highest proposed fine issued by the government last year was $440 for one of the ventilation violations. Many of the violations prompted $60 fines.

"If I go down the street in Washington, D.C., at 10 mph over the speed limit, I'm going to get much higher fine than that," union official Baker said.

I think that's the first question, more than anything about God.

Yeah, thats what I heard on the news
There was instant rage against the company officials who withheld the truth for about 2 or 3 hours, b4 breaking the truth to the family members who were initially informed that their family members trapped in the mind had been found alive

I didn't really hear any reprisal against God or Christ, I heard more anger and hatred towards company officials

In addition, the company had violated numerous safety laws and codes in the past which they had been fined for, but they were disregarded or ignored by state safety officials, such is the info that comrade Severian provided for us

The CEO and company officials seemed rather indifferent when they reported the truth
Just another example of the exploitation and abuse of the workers in the US

I didn't think they could get it this wrong. :(

Yeah, a Pastor intervened in an argument and said "pray to God" or some other blather. Then one of the relatives shouted out "what the fuck has God ever done for us."
