US considers intervention in Colombia

Washington mulls tough response to kidnapping of CIA 'agents'

The Observer

The United States is considering direct military intervention in Colombia for the first time following the murder of an American and the kidnapping of three others, all suspected CIA agents.
The US embassy in Colombia has recommended Washington make a 'major response' to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) rebels responsible, and American officials have confirmed that military action is being considered to recover the men from the dense jungles of the southern province of Caqueta.

They were captured after their plane crashed into the jungle suffering engine trouble. Despite the swift arrival of the Colombian army, the rebels spirited three survivors away after executing one American and the Colombian pilot who are thought to have put up a struggle.

Washington has refused to release any information about the men, entrenching the belief that they were CIA agents on a surveillance mission.

For the people of Caqueta, the prospect of a US military incursion into the province is yet another nightmare. In the past year, since the collapse of the peace process, they have seen the suspension of local government and are living under a form of martial law. Scores of ordinary people have been tortured and murdered by right-wing paramilitaries and they face a constant campaign of bombing and kidnapping by the Farc.

I'm sorry this one is in Spanish:

But in short it says that the Ministry of Defense of Colombia stated that Spain will provide Colombia 8 Mirage planes and some satellite equipment to the Military to fight back the Farc.

It seems like both sides are using the same tatics. Unforuately for the people of Columbia it leaves them with 3 (the offical, the Farc, and the para's) armies fighting for power. (correct me if I am wrong)

CIA agents are the lowest level of scum of all. They are basically assassins, or those who set up assassaniations. We have an ex CIA agent living in my town. He fled to Canada (refugee) after he refused to go to the Middle East for on a 'mission.' He was recruited during the Vietnam war and refused to kill so he was sent on ;recon; missions to die. If he reenters America his life is basically over, so he hides in Canada knowing that his phone is constantly bugged and computers and life watched closesly.

Being Colombian, I can tell you that this is not promising. The FARC rival any other organization in ruthlessness but the reason they formed in the first place is still valid.

Things would have turned out better if they wouldn't have killed one of the agents, but I suspect they probably had to do so in self defense. Do the FARC have any major leaders? If not, perhaps they need some influential leaders to get things together and work out a better strategy.........?

They do have leaders."EL MONO" JOJOY and "TIROFIJO".
Mirage F-1 are air superiority fighters they can only be used seccesfully agaisnt other figters. The guerrillas have no air force so this is just a plan to keep the "evil" goverments of Venezuala and Brazil at bay.The US wants to make Colombia a second Israel they want to use It as a base of porations for destebalazing the region.Spain is the prime investor in all of the latinamerican nations so It's normal that they help the country or countrys that defend their economic interests. And president's Uribe's right wing goverment and paramilatery tactics are viewed as a godsend by Madrid and washington. The Mirages are a way of dealing with the problem of venezuelan F-16s and venezuelan pilots. That represent THE PROBLEM for US rule of the skys over the carribean and survelance flights over the amazon.Lets not we forget the important oiL reserves in Colombia ,Ecuador and Venezuela!
As I read in a book about southamerican politics "To control venezuelan resources you need to invade Colombia" This apears to be what Aznar and Bush want by means of turnning Colombia into a base ,all made posible buy Uribe.
