It's just finding new ways to confront the embargo.
Like Alarcon said "we are still moving towards real communism"

Well, actually I believe Fidel wants to strengthen his relationship with China because China is one of his major providers and it is estimated that China will become a world power by 2020. So, I think he is securing Cuba's future even after he dies.

From Fidel's own words...
"With a smile, Fidel affirmed that he was happy with his latest visit to China, which now looks like another country, different and improved. “I am very pleased with this latest trip to China. I’m not sure which China I’m visiting. China changes every five or six years. There are so many new things I’m unfamiliar with,” he reiterated. The Cuban leader also recalled Li Peng’s visit to the island in the middle of Hurricane Michelle, 500 kilometers in diameter. “I will never forget the interest he showed in our country’s situation and all the efforts he made. Some comrades have told me that things have never been done as quickly as they were then,” he confirmed."
