Hello guys,

I heard of despotism in the opposing ideaology section and heard it when someone talked about the Nazi regime once.

What is despotism? I was hoping you could clear this definition up for me and tell me a few examples of it.

Thanks

basicly one leader, everyone follows (correct me if im wrong)
the most simple hierarchic governmental structure, arguably the first.

Sytem of strict hierarchy that existed in ancient times. Ruler is a despot and there are no limitation of his power (what he can and cannot order others). Others are more or less slaves of a despot (some of them have greater, some of them have less freedom).

An example of despotism is ancient Egypt.

It may help to note that some synonyms for 'despotism' are 'dictatorship' and 'tyranny'.

But Despotism sounds like the hierarchy system among animals...
...one leader of the pack...

Despotism is quite simple. The despot's motto could be 'might makes right'. It is the simple use of (armed) force to govern. The despot's word is law, making the ruler above all laws.

Perhaps all forms of goverment are ultimatly despotic...
