View Full Version : God and Schizophrenia

DisIllusion

If you believe in a God(s), you're basically a schizophrenic.

God fits the mold for people who have imaginary friends, "believers" see God as the ideal being. He is loving, kind, forgiving(?) and basically perfect in definition. People talk to God. I used to be a Christian and prayed, but never seemed to receive an answer. Many of my other Christian friends say that God will talk to them in different ways but I have no way to be sure that they're not just bullshitting me to show me how morally "good" they are.

If you watched Fight Club, at the end, Tyler Durden is telling the Narrarator how he created the persona of Tyler because the Narrarator wanted a way out, but could not do it alone. The character of Tyler is everything the Narrarator ever wanted to be, but could not achieve.

This seems to fit what believers think when they talk about the higher deity of God. They want to have a way out and see in God this possibility, they want to be "God-like".

In America, 76% of people are Christians, does this mean that 76% of America is crazy?

That is actually a fair assessment. You could also replace "crazy" with "incredibly fucking stupid and/or duped".

I think the ones who take it really seriously (7% of the population?) almost certainly have serious mental problems.

A lot of people who answer "yes" when pollsters ask them if they are religious nevertheless live their daily lives as if they were atheists.

They don't concern themselves with "God's Will" or the "Rapture" or, in a lot of cases, even with church membership. Secular life is both more interesting and more fun.

It's the people who really "get into it" that you have to worry about. :o

The beliefs in the supernatural is a normal and natural human behavior. Plus he had DONE THE RESEARCH into the human behavior. All you have done is post a rant.

There are no normal natural behaviors. We are simply products of our environment. As products, most of us are naturally expected to believe in a god because thats what our parents expect of us.

I have no way to be sure that they're not just bullshitting me to show me how morally "good" they are. [When they say they talk to god]

In no uncertain terms I can tell you this: they're bullshitting you.

My grandmother was as staunch a catholic as you'd ever meet (my mother was too, but a little less intense) and she used to say to me consistently that "God works in mysterious ways". When I questioned this (as every "bad boy" does) she would give me some examples, given that as far as she was concerned I was just an inquisitive member of the same "club": One that I distinctly remember is being told that she had prayed to request assistance in making a decision between two men and that later that day one of them had been late for their meeting - and this was supposed to be "conclusive proof" that god was watching us, cared for us and so on.

Suffice to say, that was when I realised what utter bullshit religion is and decided to ignore the whole question until someone can imperically prove the existence of any kind of deity. Until they can do that, it's totally irrelevant to our lives. We have had our scientific revolution, and religion and belief are merely remnants, similar in form to primitivism.

I use irrational methods like this to make 'small' decisions, but not because I believe a god has made it happen.

That number is too low.

While the 2004 elections already proved that the majority of them are idiots, I didn't know it was that high! :o

jambajuice, He's not posting it as a response. That's part of the website that this board is based on. RedStar2000 has no control over what advertisements Che-Lives decides to slap on here.

Excepting the cases where it is, of course.
