"Best Album" really depends on what you're looking for - the musical distance between Feeding Of The 5000 and Penis Envy or Yes Sir, I Will is huge. The jump to Ten Notes On A Summer's Day is further still.

My personal favorite is probably Stations Of The Crass. I don't think the songs are necessarily all of their best material, but as an album - as a statement - it is extremely effective. It flows . . . and stings . . . and . . .

For me it has to be the Feeding of the 5000. The bass is good, the lyrics are in-your-face, and the sound of the instruments are really catchy. The other albuns are good also (except Yes Sir, I Will, which is just meh).
My favorites songs from them are Sheep Farming in the Falklands, Reject of Society, Punk is Dead, So What?, Securicor, Do They Owe Us a Living?, Hurry Up Gary, System and Big Man, Man.

There's a "greatest hits" collection called Best Before 1984 that covers most of their different styles. I highly recommend it.

After RATM, Crass have probably done more than any other band to turn people on to radical politics.

Yep, that seems like the smartest thing to do.

The Clash? NoFX? The Dead Kennedys? Public Enemy? (not really a band, but still)

I only heard of Crass on this board whereas I'd heard all those bands before I was even intrested in leftist politics.

We've ventured into this territory before. I find their music totally unlistenable, and I listen to all kinds of stuff. Their lyrics on the other hand can be quite good. I own "Stations..." and have never been able to sit through the whole thing without getting completely bored. There are many other bands with great lyrics and great/good music to back them up I would never suggest crass to anyone.

The lyrics and message are fine. I don't like the music. Quite frankly, I find it discordant and certainly wouldn't recommend the band. It is a band that becomes easier to understand after lengthy listening, but that still doesn't make it good, unfortunately.

Not a fan really, and therefore couldn't differentiate between albums. However from what I have heard they are quite poor instrumentally, although this needn't be a roblem, but although they have lyrics, they are made more inaccessible by poor singing.

"Idiots Are Taking Over"

It's not the right time to be sober
now the idiots have taken over
spreading like a social cancer, is there an answer?

Mensa membership receding
tell me why and how are all the stupid people breeding
Watson, it's really elementary
the industrial revolution
has flipped the page on evolution
the benevolent and wise are being thwarted, ostracized, what a bummer
the world keeps getting dumber
insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason

darwin's rollin over in his coffin
the fittest are surviving much less often
now everything seems to be reversing, and it's worsening
someone dropped a steamer in the gene pool
now angry mob mentality's no longer the exception, it's the rule
and im startin to feel a lot like charlton heston
stranded on a primate planet
apes and orangutans that ran it to the ground
with generals and the armies that obeyed them
followers following fables
philosophies that enable them to rule without regard

there's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated
political scientists get the same one vote as some Arkansas inbred
majority rule, don't work in mental institutions
sometimes the smallest softest voice carries the grand biggest solutions

what are we left with?
a nation of god-fearing pregnant nationalists
who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland
pass on traditions
how to get ahead religions
And prosperity via simpleton culture

the idiots are takin over [x8]

I have 2 of CRASS's albums they are: "The Feeding of the 5000" and "Stations of the Crass".

I used to like Crass alot however I find them really annoying to listen too. Their singing is terrible and it hard to hear the lyrics.

The best band that I like that I think have got it going for them for spreading radical political views is "Left Over Crack" and "Propagandhi"

I've never really like RATM to be honest, I'm more of a Ska punk kind of fella.

Check out the site "Mad Butcher Records" they've got some great political music.

oh wow, they have one album of supposedly left wing songs... considering they haven't released a good album in years i doubt it will do anything to bring anyone to a radical perspective

Not to mention that that song has implicit reactionary themes, and anti-proletarian themes in its depiction of those who are 'breeding'

I wouldn't know considering I only have the greatest hits and a few songs I've downloaded

 You should check out the songs, 'The Idiots Are Taking Over', 'There's No Fun In Fudmentalism', 'Linoleum', and a few others.

Yeah...

and anti-proletarian themes in its depiction of those who are 'breeding'
I think it's just a shot at the sort of reactionary white-trash, "who feel it's their duty to populate the homeland"

Anyway, NoFX are't even a band I'm too crazy about, but they are most definitely leftist.

A wonderful anti vanguard song by crass, a great rallying cry for those who oppose the state just as much as they oppose captalism.

"Bloody Revolutions"

You talk about your revolution, well, that's fine
But what are you going to be doing come the time?
Are you going to be the big man with the tommy-gun?
Will you talk of freedom when the blood begins to run?
Well, freedom has no value if violence is the price
Don't want your revolution, I want anarchy and peace

You talk of overthrowing power with violence as your tool
You speak of liberation and when the people rule
Well ain't it people rule right now, what difference would there be?
Just another set of bigots with their rifle-sights on me

But what about those people who don't want your new restrictions?
Those that disagree with you and have their own convictions?
You say they've got it wrong because they don't agree with you
So when the revolution comes you'll have to run them through
You say that revolution will bring freedom for us all
Well freedom just ain't freedom when your back's against the wall

You talk of overthrowing power with violence as your tool
You speak of liberation and when the people rule
Well ain't it people rule right now, what difference would there be?
Just another set of bigots with their rifle-sights on me

Will you indoctrinate the masses to serve your new regime?
And simply do away with those whose views are too extreme?
Transportation details could be left to British rail
Where Zyklon B succeeded, North Sea Gas will fail
It's just the same old story of man destroying man
We've got to look for other answers to the problems of this land

You talk of overthrowing power with violence as your tool
You speak of liberation and when the people rule
Well ain't it people rule right now, what difference would there be?
Just another set of bigots with their rifle-sights on me

Vive la revolution, people of the world unite
Stand up men of courage, it's your job to fight

It all seems very easy, this revolution game
But when you start to really play things won't be quite the same
Your intellectual theories on how it's going to be
Don't seem to take into account the true reality
Cos the truth of what you're saying, as you sit there sipping beer
Is pain and death and suffering, but of course you wouldn't care

You're far too much of a man for that, if Mao did it so can you
What's the freedom of us all against the suffering of the few?
That's the kind of self-deception that killed ten million jews
Just the same false logic that all power-mongers use
So don't think you can fool me with your political tricks
Political right, political left, you can keep your politics
Government is government and all government is force
Left or right, right or left, it takes the same old course
Oppression and restriction, regulation, rule and law
The seizure of that power is all your revolution's for
You romanticise your heroes, quote from Marx and Mao
Well their ideas of freedom are just oppression now

Nothing changed for all the death, that their ideas created
It's just the same fascistic games, but the rules aren't clearly stated
Nothing's really different cos all government's the same
They can call it freedom, but slavery is the game

Nothing changed for all the death, that their ideas created
It's just the same fascistic games, but the rules aren't clearly stated
Nothing's really different cos all government's the same
They can call it freedom, but slavery is the game
There's nothing that you offer but a dream of last years hero
The truth of revolution, brother................... is year zero.
