If anyone on this site plays guitar or bass and uses powertabs.net, then you probably know the site is down at the moment - an i just found out why:

The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics.
The US Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006.

MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed.

He said unlicensed guitar tabs and song scores were widely available on the internet but were "completely illegal".

Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective".

Bitter battles

The priks of the music industry are killing music - if we cant share music over the internet, even just scores, then how are people supposed to learn songs/share their own songs without forkin out a fistful o cash that not all of us have??

As more and more proprety gets digitized...I wonder what extreme draconian measures the State will take to hunt down "criminals"?

Its a losing battle tho, don't worry. We'll probably just start file sharing tabs. Haha bittorent owns!

That just takes the piss really...I'd like to see some kind of legal basis for their case though.

As long as they dont start on the 911tabs.com sites its survivable! But damn, they should show at least a bit of respect to music fans, instead of making people pay for fucking air!

That is just bullshit. More reasons to hate life. Although i dont use tabs cause im a drummer and drum tabs are just the worst thing ever to read if you are a real drummer, my band uses tabs all the time and none of us are rich enough to buy them. i cant stand how everything is run by god damned coorparations. As if this is the land of the free. The government has lost all control over everything. Sooner or later we will all start voting for companies instead of people to run our country.

What the fuck is that ?!

How can they do that ?

I play guitar and bass and I get my tabs from www.911tabs.com

that's the only way I can play songs... I don't have time to study notes and sheet music...

And how can it be made illegal when you can buy tab books with licensed tabs from artists in it... ??

And above every tab you find on tab sites it says it's an interpretation of the song not copied from anywhere or something...

no tab books and sheet music are fine because they've been liscensed
but tabs like from powertabs and 911 (this isn't my view but this is what theyre claiming) are ripping of the copyrights to the song as people are getting free versions of it without filling the music industries pockets

I was wondering why mxtabs.net was down.. Man this is really a pain in the ass. Good thing I'm starting to get really good at playing by ear though..

Still, if you guys need tabs and the site you use is down, just use google. I just type, band name + songname + guitar tab, and I'm usually able to find it.

Also remember that tabs online require that we put as much back as we take out - if you figure a song out, give it back

OLGA (http://www.olga.net/) still accept submissions and in my opinion are still the best of the tab sites out there. Certainly the longest running anyway.

For those of you who use Harmony Central - stop. OLGA are losing money daily as a result of Harmony Central...

hey more proof - from 911 search for a tab from taborama (or just go to taborama) and it says on the site that the tabs have been removed for legal reasons...

that sucks. the majority of people finding tabs online are just playing for personal pleasure and not even making money from it. why the fuck deny us the right to express ourselves through music? Thats what music is, expression and we like music that we can relate to and play the songs that we can relate to because they express us. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Bet the majority of professional musicians dont even mind us playing their music, just their fucking suits trying to drain more money.

Well as the tabs you buy are completely useless, I doubt that this can succeed - people need tabs, and will have to get them from somewhere.
Anyway, the sites can just be hosted elsewhere, and if you google the tabs you always get them.
