It is a common misconception to assume that the dictatorship of the proletariat is a totalitarian form of government, as it has been portrayed in popular culture. Nations such as China, Vietnam and the post-1956 Soviet Union are not proper examples of what Marx originally described. The dictatorship is meant to be that of the entire class and not of an elite individual or clique. Without this transitional period there is not feasible way in which true Communism can be realized. You should inform these people that dictatorship may be sending the wrong message and that life in this transitional period would not be like that experienced in a dictatorship as it has come to be known.

by the same regards, today the world is controlled by the dictatorship of the bourgeois. American and other First World policies kill people every day. Explain that.

The reasoning behind the ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’ is based upon the history of humanity. All hitherto states have been the dictatorship of a certain class. In capitalism, the ruling class is the capitalist — the bourgeoisie or the landowners who exploit labor for their own wealth. Socialists believe in the overthrow of the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie and institution of the dictatorship of the proletariat, a genuinely democratic society. The dictatorship of the proletariat is a form of democracy marked by certain characteristics unfamiliar to all previous forms of democracy. These are proletarian representatives, direct election, and recallable representatives.

In short, "no". Because socialism is a dictatorship because socialism invovles one class ruling over the other.

ok so let me get this straight socialism destroys the dictaorship of the bourgeois so that the dictatorship of the proletariat can rule but within this dictatorship there are still elections. so even though it is a dictatorship there is stil democracy. so inturn the dictatorship of the proletariat only rules over the bourgeois. but if we our working to reach a equal society how can this work

The dictatorship of the proletariat would exist after the revolution. It is the 'thing' that signals the revolution as victorious.

I don't think any kind of 'elections' will be seen. In this period immediately after the revolution, I think that power will be becoming extremely decentralized, and the first communes may even start to be established. In each commune, the proletariat will hold power over the bourgeoisie. I am guessing the method of rule will be direct democracy within the commune, excluding the bourgeoisie.

I doubt the bourgeoisie will be capable of living peacefully alongside the porletariat, however, so it is highly unlikely, in my view, that any bourgeoisie will actually be found inside any communes. Any bougeoisie who have 'changed sides' for whatever reason will probably do so during the revolution. And so the proletariat will use their acquired power not only to 'rebuild' after the revolution, but also to hunt down and destroy any pockets of still fighting bourgeoisie.

To understand why such tactics will lead to communism, I think we must understand the class interests of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.

Once the proletariat are at the stage where they have indeed had the revolution (the stage we are hear talking of), communism will obviously be in their material interests. Capitalism is obviously in the bourgeoisie's material interests. And so, for communism to exist, the bourgeoisie as a class must be destroyed. This does not neccesarily mean all the bourgeoisie will be killed, as I described, some bourgeoisie may find communism a worthwhile goal. But this will not be likely at all.

So, the only way things can be rebuilt and the bourgeoisie can be destroyed after the revolution is through the dictatorship of the proletariat. Once the bourgeoisie are destroyed, communism will come into existence.
