IM not sure what happened in Korea but in Viet Nam the communists also had a platform of freeing their country from French Domination because Viet Nam used to be a French colony. The French government used to exploit the Vietnamese people and the rescources of their country. One example is how the French used to force Vietnamese people to fight in French wars over in Asia and kill their own neigbors for French issues.
The Vietnamese had a few things going on to reclaim their own land because when your coutnry is being run by another country before you can even have independance for the WORKERS, the country needs independance from another country, becuase in a way when a country rules your country its like your country is just a whole country of workers sort of.
There was the Viet Minh: Ho Chi Minh spent his whole life almost fighting for Vietnamese freedom. He went to France, tried to get the French concerned, alot of Europeans didnt care....shit, he even asked a US president to help because Ho Chi Minh admired the American Revolution and how they dusted off English control and made their own constitution.
Right after world war one, he went into the Versailles conference, thats a conference where world leaders of all the western nations like france germany and america were trying to come to terms and make peace....Ho Chi Minh went in there and tried to state his case to the American president in the Versailles conference and that bastard just turned Ho away like him and his struggle werent shit. And Ho Chi Minh begun to realize that these Western Imperialist nations didnt give a damn about the third world. They werent making any advancement in the freedom of the third world. They'll try to make peace all with each other at the Versailles conference to stop each other from taking each other's land, but when it comes to a brown man's third world country, thats another story and none of them can be assed with caring about that. So they turned Ho away, and alot of times alot of Europeans were very underconcerned.
Around these times he begun to realise that if the third world worker is going to get any freedom he just has to get it himself! The Imperialist nations arent going to help a whole lot, they want to keep the third world poor enough and down so that they can exploit it and take all those people's shit and trade it. Sometimes if you want freedom you are going to have to do it yourself. And he came to realizeations in alot of the writings of Lenin , who said alot of the same things.
Not only did Ho CHi Minh and alot of like minds want to be finished being dominated by other countries, they wanted the workers in their country to stop being dominated by the upper class! Shit, why not go all the way?! Ho CHi Minh for one, like alot of other Viet Namese folks in his country, grew up pretty poor himself.
The like minds founded the Viet Minh, aimed at getting independance for VIET NAM, and a real lot of them were communist. They got money all kinds of ways. It was real gansta! They'd turn in their own people for reward money and then cause a public upheaval that set them free again after they got the money. The VIet Minh were genius at fighting the french. They even fought so hard that VIet Nam got divided in half, they had the North which was for Communism, and then the south which still had ties with the French and had a mean leader who put people in concentration camps and got union protesters shot down whos name was Diem.
There were people who lived in the South that were real pissed with Diem, they wanted their whole country united and alot of them wanted a united country that worked for the goal of Communism. Because thats what Communist countries do, they are working for the goal of communism, the world has never seen it.
These people in the south that didnt want the Diem government, alot of them joined up with the north but stayed down there. The North helped them out, and the disenfranchised southerners fought the southern viet namese government, they were guerillas. Not all of them had to be communist. But they were called the Viet Cong. The North and the Viet Cong recieved Soviet and Chinese aid. The South Viet Nam Diem government got help from AMerica and the French.
There were many things that transpired but when you put it all together the VC had more of a reason to fight then the Americans who were forced to be in that foreign land fighting another countrys war, and the Viet COng won and Viet Nam became united.
....Now they make shoes for the Capitalists.

The Soviets liberated the north in August '45, and the Americans did the south in September. The Americans then betrayed the Koreans by refusing to recognise the provisional government in Shanghai because it was a "communist insurgency", even though it had joined the allies in the war(amusingly, these days the South Korean puppet government claims to be the sole successor of the Provisional Government).
The Americans and Soviets then decided to split the country by the 38th parallel, cutting it in half. General McArthur directly governed the south, and in 1948, not the Provisional Government, which had some elements from the communist resistance against the Japanese in it, was pushed forward, but the anti-communist Syngman Rhee.
In the north, the Soviets set up their own government and started land reforms that were popular with the farmers, and in 1948, Kim Il-sung's provisional government was formed. The United Nations then started searching for a solution, but they always favoured the anti-communist south more than the north, so no real solution was reached.
Soviet and American forces both left, and Syngman Rhee and Kim Il-sung were both itching to reunite the peninsula. There were a lot of forays across the 38th parallel by both sides, and eventually it escalated into a total war. I'll post more on that when I'm back from school.
