Agents' visit chills UMass Dartmouth senior
By AARON NICODEMUS, Standard-Times staff writer

NEW BEDFORD -- A senior at UMass Dartmouth was visited by federal agents two months ago, after he requested a copy of Mao Tse-Tung's tome on Communism called "The Little Red Book."
Two history professors at UMass Dartmouth, Brian Glyn Williams and Robert Pontbriand, said the student told them he requested the book through the UMass Dartmouth library's interlibrary loan program.
The student, who was completing a research paper on Communism for Professor Pontbriand's class on fascism and totalitarianism, filled out a form for the request, leaving his name, address, phone number and Social Security number. He was later visited at his parents' home in New Bedford by two agents of the Department of Homeland Security, the professors said.
The professors said the student was told by the agents that the book is on a "watch list," and that his background, which included significant time abroad, triggered them to investigate the student further.
"I tell my students to go to the direct source, and so he asked for the official Peking version of the book," Professor Pontbriand said. "Apparently, the Department of Homeland Security is monitoring inter-library loans, because that's what triggered the visit, as I understand it."
Although The Standard-Times knows the name of the student, he is not coming forward because he fears repercussions should his name become public. He has not spoken to The Standard-Times.
The professors had been asked to comment on a report that President Bush had authorized the National Security Agency to spy on as many as 500 people at any given time since 2002 in this country.
The eavesdropping was apparently done without warrants.
The Little Red Book, is a collection of quotations and speech excerpts from Chinese leader Mao Tse-Tung.
In the 1950s and '60s, during the Cultural Revolution in China, it was required reading. Although there are abridged versions available, the student asked for a version translated directly from the original book.
The student told Professor Pontbriand and Dr. Williams that the Homeland Security agents told him the book was on a "watch list." They brought the book with them, but did not leave it with the student, the professors said.
Dr. Williams said in his research, he regularly contacts people in Afghanistan, Chechnya and other Muslim hot spots, and suspects that some of his calls are monitored.
"My instinct is that there is a lot more monitoring than we think," he said.
Dr. Williams said he had been planning to offer a course on terrorism next semester, but is reconsidering, because it might put his students at risk.
"I shudder to think of all the students I've had monitoring al-Qaeda Web sites, what the government must think of that," he said. "Mao Tse-Tung is completely harmless."

I find this horrible. I think that the government is watching us close than many of us may think. We should all really be watching what we do. It's ridiculous that federal agents would visit a student because the checked out the Little Red Book. I wonder if this is part of the patriot act, it probaly is.

Absolutely ridiculous.

This stuff bothers me, because I'm somewhat of a curious guy. I mean, I may look up something like "Molotov Cocktail" or "Pipe Bomb", not because I actually plan on making or using that stuff, but....I'm just interested you know what I mean?

I gurantee that most communist related books are on that damned list.

This site MUST be getting watched, I mean, is there any leftist sites online that are as big as this?

This shows such an obvious abuse of power.

As Mao has nothing to do with Terrorism, Islam, or anything like that at all.

They are using the patriot act to try and stop communism, porn, drugs, and everything else that they can. Thats why I can't wait for it to expire.

I agree Comrade.
This site must be watched.
I will carry my "Mao Red book" when I travel next week.
I wonder if it will be confiscated at the airport.
LOL.

America the free, hunh. ;)

I don't know of a Canadian literature watch list, but I know there are a list of sites whose access has been restricted by The Can. Intel. agency. The list of sites is easily accessed at the governments web site, and I was even written back to when I requested they remove a site from their list. The site was not on their list but agents had taken it upon themselves to write to Server operators warning them not to allow access to certain sites that weren,t on the list. The letters are being investigated.

I wonder if the US lists are accessible to it's citizens?

What did the Department of Homeland Security think that guy was going to do with Mao's Little Red Book? Start a peasant revolution? With what American peasants? Or perhaps they thought that this man would take it to a meeting with environmental activists, which the US government also considers extremely dangerous, plan to overthrow the US government, and shout "Long Live Chairman Mao on the way out. These Patriot Acts not only show the extent to which citizen's rights have been violated and the abuse of power by the government but also the paranoia that pervades the government. For all we know, the government may come and question me about this post and about the two "Little Red Books" that I own.

Have the SS monitor their own citizenry is common, and nobody should be surprised. All outraged, but not surprised. however, the above comment is more dangerous. The teacher actually thinks this is something which he can, "understand", and obviously is appropreiate measures taken. How repulsive is it when teachers actually encourage students not to be intellectual, to oppressive academic creative thinking, and freedom of thought. Neo-McCarthyism I'm telling you. Today's terrorist scare, is just the red scare of yester-year.

What's there to monitor? Any jackass can read the posts here, they're neither secret nor the holy grail of western socialism.

I encourage everyone to borrow any subversive litterature from the library;
Even if you've read it already let it gather dust and rack up fines.
Be sure to walk into the library with a bandanna over your face.

When the feds come knocking on your door open it up and say " Fuck off I ordered a pizza, not pigs."

When they monitor you for 24 hours watch the worst T.V imaginable, don't co-opperate with them.

Tell them none of the people had a chance to vote on their sneaky bastard fascist act.
