Hey guys,

In the 'utopian' communist society the whole world would be one state. So therefore 'international' would not exist because everyone is living under one nation.

So in theory that would mean the World Cup (football) would be abolished because there would only be one football team? And so on.

In a 'utopian' communist society is this what would happen?

I see no reason why communes couldn't play each other.

A few critiques:
-The whole world would not be one state because there would be NO states in the first place, hence the "stateless" part of communism.
-Utopias cannot exist, everybody can't be pleased.
-What good would one football team be?

Of course sports would still exist, they would even be more accessible for both people to play and to watch. However I'm not a huge fan of competitive play because it is too much like capitalism on the ball fields. Cups would also probaly not exist because competition would most likely be thrown out the door along with all other western decadences. Sports were invented for fun and entertainment and they should always be that way.

So yes, the world cup would be abolished, but not because there is only one team, because there would be no competition.

Hello,

The whole world would not be one state because there would be NO states in the first place, hence the "stateless" part of communism.

If the earth would be stateless then there would only be one state, earth?

-Utopias cannot exist, everybody can't be pleased.

That is true.

-What good would one football team be?

I don't know, that's why I am asking you.

However I'm not a huge fan of competitive play because it is too much like capitalism on the ball fields.

Alot of sport is based on competitive play (basketball, football, rugby, hockey, snooker), what fun is it if you just run around a pitch pointlessly? It is true people are still playing for fun but ultimately they are still competing against each other.

Cups would also probaly not exist because competition would most likely be thrown out the door along with all other western decadences

Why? Cups represent an achievement just like a medal does, it shows determination and hardwork. East and West have both used Medals and other emblems to represent achievements, so it's not only a 'western decadency'

Sports were invented for fun and entertainment and they should always be that way.

The competitive aspect of sport is what makes it fun and entertaining. What fun is it in watching two people that can't play tennis? It's not entertaining. The Gladitorial games were based on competitivness and how the weaker gladiator would be slain in some cases, hence it being entertaining because the competitive gladiators kept audiences at the edge of their seat.

Noah, you seem to misunderstand the nature of 'the state'. the state is not just an area, but rather it is a machine, a hierarchy of rulers. The US government is representative of 'the state', for example. With communism the state, as I described, disappears. It would be replaced by small communes, which would probably be about the size of the old Greek city-states. Why cannot these communes each sport a team in appropriate sports?

Competitive play also involves much cooperation. With the added leisure time that communism would surely allow, those who wish to play any type of sport will be free to play. There is no parallel between the competitiveness of sports and the competitiveness of capitalism. The latter ends lives, but the former enhances many a life. The existence of 'cups' or 'rewards' for 'achievement' in sports will be based upon the wishes of the communes involved.

This is, of course, all entirely theoretical, as we really do not know what will happen to 'sports' after the revolution. But I see no reason to believe differently than as I have written.

Hold with me for a minute or two.

If the earth would be stateless then there would only be one state, earth?

No, the state is a tool of the government. It is not a nation, society or community.

I see no problem with teams playing other teams, but I don't like the scoring part. It makes the team that lost feel bad. And sometimes they keep losing, like they're stuck in a rut that they can never get out of. They can lose their fan support and even their players morale.

Why? Cups represent an achievement just like a medal does, it shows determination and hardwork. East and West have both used Medals and other emblems to represent achievements, so it's not only a 'western decadency'

Too often cups represent the, "Oooh! We on and you lost, that makes us better than you." The cups are often organized that attended by the wealthy because of the exorbitant prices of the tickets. Hence the "Western decadence" part.

There would still be talent in the games. People would also still be at the edge of their seats. I suppose there would be 'game competition', but not really widespread competition.

One reason I don't play sports at school is because of all the competition.

But this competition which you despise is something others obviously find fun. And we should not confuse the level of competition existent in sports with that existent in capitalism. It's simply not the same.

The names of places we have today will remain as the geographical names in the future.

There will still be a Brazillian football team, there will still be a german footbal team - they will come from the commune known as Brazil and Germany

Ah okay, thankyou for clarifying the concept of 'the state' up guys.
