In the late 19th and early 20th century there was this movement in America. A bunch of farmers got together and communally bought equipment they could never have afforded on their own. They pushed land reform and many other progressive concepts for their time. Though many were racist as most white people were at the time, it was the start of a threat to the power of the capitalist dream of a corporate feudal state. So, what did they do to blunt this movement? The Democratic Party sucked up the Populist movement in order to quell it. At the time there was no difference in the rhetoric of either party. Now while there is a populist category of the Democratic party, the leadership still seeks to blunt its effectiveness.

And that is why the Democratic Party is two faced today.
