Most solos by Kerry King from slayer are amazing, such as in raining blood, angel of death, seasons in the abyss, and countless others.
Judas Priest is also amazing, Painkiller is my favorite song by them

Guitar solos suck, are enirely needless, and should be abolished. It's sole reason is to give the guitar player a chance to show off.

How did I forget to add Hendrix. Yeah for some reason I really love the solo in The Wind Cries Mary, really melodic.
Yeah The Package does have an awsome solo, I have White Room going now, cool solo.
You nailed it on the head Malte. The same as bass solos, drum solos, acapella vocals etc. All the artists in this tread have "made it big" to some degree, why not show off. As a drummer, the gutair solo it the best part of the song, you can go fucken nuts and besides although not all songs need them, some just aren't quite complet without one.

Instrumental parts that include guitar, between lyrics, can rock!
my fav is Ballroom of mars- T-rex Marc Bolan does 2 interwining guitars that sounds like chimes in the wind. Simple, but amazing.

The idolization of the vocalist is just another example of western corruptation of music in general! Dont worry, guitar solos will disappear as the pop culture will advance further. and so will punk, indie, metal, grunge, jazz, folk, etc etc etc! Any music that requires a developed taste!
Back to topic; The solo in Fall To Pieces, by Velvet Revolver is totally awesome, even further; Master of Puppets, and Megadeth - No More Mr. Nice Guy

Ritchie Blackmoors solo on "Gypsys Kiss" on the perfect strangers album is awsome. Yngwie Malmsteens first two albums have unreal solos. The first five Iron Maiden albums kick ass. All the Rush albums from the 70s to the mid 80s have awsome solos.

The solo in Working Man by rush is pretty sweet.
So is any Pink Floyd quitar solo. My favs would be the solo in Time, off of DSOTM, and the solo in Hey You from The wall,
