http://www.myfootprint.org/

Go there and take the quiz and find out how large your ecological footprint is. You can also find out how many worlds would be needed if everyone lived like you.

I took the quiz and I wasn't too stunned with my results, here they are.

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 ACRES PER PERSON.

WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 4 PLANETS.

At least I live quite a bit below the average for the United States.

hey, i thought i was going to do much worse than this, living in canada and all. but i guess the constant guilt for my complicity in perpetuating injustices because of where I live has paid off! :P over the years, i have put a lot of effort into minimizing my footprint, and this reflects in the questions they asked. but they didn't take into consideration my weaknesses... like. if they had included "how often do you shop at the dollar store," i think i would have done a lot worse :(

How come most of you guys make only a 2-4 acre footprint? Are you subsistence farmers or something? This is one reason why it's extremely frustrating to hear ignorant people in developed nations blame the pollution and ecological problems on the overpopulation in developing nations. They simply don't understand that their children creates more pollution and makes a larger footprint than say around 8 or 9 Nepalese kids.

no, i'm not a subsistence farmer

i think it has a lot to do with where you live and how few resources you have.

for example, i live, work, and go to school in downtown toronto. i basically never leave downtown. this means that i walk pretty much everywhere, and only very occasionally take the subway. i don't have a car.

i rarely leave town because i don't have a lot of time or money. if i had more money, i would travel. but since i don't, i don't fly much.

also, i live in a very small apartment because rent in downtown toronto is very high.

as for the food thing, i'm vegan so that accounts for the low food score.

i am well aware that if i were living in rural ontario, i would probably have some kind of vehicle and probably a bigger apartment (since places are more affordable), which would lead to a higher score.

The Volvo, if it's as old as I think it is, would be 10-15l/100km. The Pajero, if it's a V6 would be around 15l/100km, if it's a turbo-diesel, then it's about 10-11l/100km

Hrm.

So chicken and cattle leave the same footprint, eh? Somehow I don't think so.

Apparently, what one does when s/he, well, you know, erm, works doesn't matter. So if I ride a car daily to work in garbage recycling plant, I have a larger foot print than if I go by bike to work in a woodmill? Again, I don't think so.
