Was Che a Communist or a Socialist?

I am reading a book about Che's Life. It mentioned several times about Che's growing ties and curiosity with the communist party. it also mentioned that he dreamed of a socialist society. so which is it. was he a communist or a socialist?

Che was a Marxist which means that he knew that a socialist state (socialist in the Marxist sense) must precede communist society. When compared to the reformist socialists Che was a communist as he fought for this communist society.

I don't know where you are quoting that from, but Che was more of a libertarian socialist... his ideas were very anarchistic, but the revolutions he fought for were more Marxist.

There seems to be some confusion about Che’s political orientation here. Make no mistake, the man was a hardline Marxist-Leninist who, initially at least, fully supported and endorsed the Soviet Union. Hardly surprising considering the times he lived in. He later began to lean towards the Maoists, hardly a move towards more libertarian ideology. Che was not “just” a revolutionary and he certainly was no anarchist.

The image of Che means different things to different people but the man himself was flesh and blood and he held ideals that have not dated as well as his face.
