By Veronika Dintinjana...
We had an anti-war demonstration in Ljubljana, Slovenia, too. The intellectuals demand that the Minister of Foreign Affairs withdraw his signature from the
Vilnius declaration. In general, no one is satisfied with the position the government has taken. This declaration was signed in the light of the coming referendum on joining the Nato. Public support for Nato has sunk to an all-time low, even though Nato membership has been one of the political priorities for the past ten years. Last but not least, the national defense has gone through extensive restructuring, due to which we currently have no defence at all. As for the budget, I''ve heard that
there are 200 000 policemen on the streets of NY. How many soldiers do you think we have? ( 7000 or less; not to mention the fleet: one sailing boat and two motor boats, I believe the crew numbers a dozen)
Hm ... That the mouse can frighten the elephant is only a story for children. I bet our Minister of Foreign Affairs wishes there was no Iraq nor the US.

Hey, Deimos, I didn't know this about you. It's good to hear that you've been there and talked to ppl there.
I've posted this on behalf of someone else and your feedback is truly interesting. I can't give much of an opinion coz I'm not aware realy about what's going on, so, as I said before, it is good to learn from what you say.
Thanks!

The people of Slovenia should count themselves lucky they aren't involved in an arms race. The United States has one of the most bloated military budgets in the world, meanwhile our public schools and hospitals are in a deplorable state. What Slovenia needs to do is stay out of foreign affairs. Look at Sweden, they don't bother anybody and somehow maintain a higher standard of living than the U.S.

I agree 100% with praxis. Why do we in europe have such an high standard of living???because we don't maintain such a big army!!!!For what do we need it anyway??No one would attack an european country. And it's impossible to fight terrorism with weapons.
But we don't stay out of things which are none of our business...You can't imagine how many austrian artillary grenades you can find in kurdistan...

A interesting thing is that a province of Slovenia (Bela Kranja) has threatened to seced from Slovenia if it joins NATO, and yet Slovenia still wishes to join NATO!

I think it's good if countries like slovenia, estonia and lithuania join the nato. They've almost no army, but they can decide like the other memers....imagine 50 countries decide!!!!Decisions will be impossible...

I am from a Slovene family now living in the US, and although I was born here, My family still has ties with Slovenia. We have alot of family there, and contact them by email frequently. Politics seems to be a favorite topic in these emails, and my family at least, seems to be opposed to any war.
I do think they will end up joining NATO and the EU, unless France goes through with their threats to block the Slavic countries' addmittance.
I would like to see them remain out of these orginizations.
