Artist Protest Anti-Sedition Laws

AN OPEN INVITATION TO ALL ARTISTS TO CONTRIBUTE A WORK TOWARDS AN
URGENT EXHIBITION OF PROTEST AGAINST THE PROPOSED SEDITION LAWS

Artists in Australia are deeply concerned about the impact of the Federal Governments proposed Anti-Terrorism Legislation on free speech in Australia.

The expansion of the Sedition laws included in this Bill, is the greatest threat to contemporary artists imposed by the Government in the history of the Commonwealth. The proposed Sedition laws in the Anti-Terrorism Bill will severely constrain the freedom of expression of visual artists and all Australian citizens by introducing punitive imprisonment measures.

This is a direct attack on the democratic right of ALL artists. It is a policy of intimidation against artists whose art practices are political and oppositional, to the prevailing ideas of art, Government and the State.

The Sedition laws are aimed at silencing all views that run contrary to the views of Government, and challenge the fundamental right of artists to freedom of expression. They are an exercise of censorship, government control and regulation on all art, artists and galleries by making them vulnerable to charges of seditious intent as interpreted by Government under the proposed Anti- Terrorist Legislation.

Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commissioner, President John Von Doussa, said that the proposed Anti-Terrorist Legislation is the first step towards a Police State.

Artists and the whole art community MUST object and oppose the introduction of this oppressive legislation. Artists cannot afford to remain silent or neutral on this urgent matter. Artists must act now! It is a crisis for Australian democracy.

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre invites all artists to have a say and protest against the Anti-Terror/Sedition Legislation and our right to dissent. It is an open invitation to all artists concerned about the implications of this proposed legislation to make a work that expresses your fundamental rights to freedom of expression as a means of protesting against the Federal Government's proposed legislation.
