POLICE CRUSH WORLD AIDS DAY MARCH. ACTIVISTS DETAINED

In an act of outrageous barbarism the Zimbabwe Republic Police descended on today¹s World Aids Day march and ordered the marchers to disperse. As we go to press five of the organizers of today¹s protests are still in police custody since midday. These are Munyaradzi Gwisai of ISO, Mao Nyikadzino (NCA), Sostain Moyo (Zimbabwe Activists Against Aids ), and Anna and Gladys from the Women Aids Support Network (WASN)

The sad Irony of the matter is that the police had given clearance for the World Aids Day march and the gathering in the Africa Unity Square only to turn around and say the proceedings can not go ahead and worse still arrest people. This is clearly a matter of setting up a trap and waylaying people on the way.

The success of today¹s action is very inspiring. Hundreds of us marched on the streets of Harare singing and raising our banners for over 30 minutes. People carried banners demanding access to ARVs and demands from the Action Against Poverty. These included living wage for workers, fuel, affordable sanitary pads and baby milk and reduction of taxation. People were also calling for transparency on the AIDS levy to which workers painfully contribute but some heartless regime bureaucrats are looting. There was also significant presence of NCA activists calling for a new people driven constitution.

Lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights are busy trying to get the arrested comrdaes released. We are asking cdes to bombard the police station with calls and faxes demanding the release of those in police custody.

None of this is suprising to me, we are talking about the despotism of Robert Mugabe after all!

Like all other corrupt, blood soaked African leaders, Mugabe denies or ignores that AIDS is a problem, allowing those who suffer to fall prey to backward superstition and religion which has only caused further AIDS related deaths in Africa.

Only last month the wife of Ugandan dictator, Janet Musevini, dropped the official government policy of handing out condoms and contraceptives, instead taking up the U$ 'abstinace' campaign, which of course goes down well with the Christian fascists in the U$A and Africa.

Robert Mugabe has clearly gone senile and mentally unstable, as he seems to be deliberatly pushing Zimbabwe into bankruptcy and starving his population, why he is doing it is a question that cannot gve any logical or rational answers.

Im sure most people remeber the attacks Mugabe did on the shanty towns and the so-called 'criminals' of the black market, just workers and people in poverty who are trying to get enough money for their next meal.

I do supprt the redistrbution of land from the white rich elite of landonwers, whom never had any real or legitimate claim to that land, and the handing of land to the black rural majority.

However, Mugabe used this legitimate demand of the people for his own twisted ends to gain support for his regime, as discontent was gaining ground after the people saw that after 20 years in power, Mugabe had nothing to offer the people.

This expalins why Mugabe never gave training to the black workers who were given land, with some owning tractors but not knowing how to use them etc...

There was and still is no training programme for the workers who now own land, so they cannot use thier land for food production, causing famine.

Also Mugabe has used this as an opputunity to give large land segments to his cronies, most of them forming a very wealthy elite at the top of the ruling capitalist class in Zimbabwe.

yes its very ignorant tht ppl claim tht HIV/AIDS is not a problem wen so many people in the world have bene effecting and killed by AIDS, in my opinion Popes r a factor to blaim for this since they preach the world not to use Codoms, and also african tribal myths like the one is..for a male infected member to have sex with a virgin and tht would cure him of AIDS , this is ludicris, these tribes have to be educated the truth to try and prevent the spread of AIDS among Africans
