Bloomberg Signs Jail Time Bill For Rowdy Sports Fans
December 01, 2005
Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a bill into law Thursday that could give sports fans jail time if they throw something onto the field at a sporting event or run onto the field.
If a potentially dangerous item is thrown, offenders could get up to a year in prison.
The City Council passed the measure last month.
Councilman Peter Vallone sponsored the bill after witnessing an ugly and potentially dangerous scene at Yankee Stadium.
During Game Six of the 2004 American League Championship Series, umpires called Alex Rodriguez out for slapping the ball away from the Red Sox pitcher. Fans threw debris on the field and police had to step in.
This is so wrong.
