Really? I always thought it was part of the whole unity image...I bet you're right though. I know - Wikipedia it!

Edit - Wikipedia says:

The five-pointed red star (a pentagram without the inner pentagon) is a symbol of Communism and Socialism and represents the five fingers of the worker's hand, as well as the five (inhabited) continents. A lesser known suggestion is that the five points on the star were intended to represent the five social groups that would lead the nation to communism. In no particular order, they are: the youth (the future generations), the military (to protect and defend socialism), industrial workers (labourers), agricultural workers (peasantry), and the intelligentsia (to criticize and to improve the ideas and practices of life in order to attain communism).

Interesting eh?

The five pointed star was for all workers from all 5 continents united (back then it were 5). And i can remember someone claiming it also stood for the workers 5 fingers.

edit: noticed someone else was faster then me, but then again the 5-pointed star on the Soviet flag stood for the 5 continents united.

Are they counting Americas as one continent or Europe and Asia as one?

Also, when did the red star become the symbol of socialism? During the Russian revolution or before it?

Yep, I always thought it meant the unity of the 5 continents (counting N and S America as one).

I like to think of it as that :)
I was discussing this with my girlfriend the other day and forgot the same one as you did, comrade Scottish_Militant, drove me insane but I managed to get on a pc and get to wiki :)

But when the red star started to be used as a symbol of socialism? I know that it was on the coat of arms of RSFSR, but was it used before?

Ever heard of the Fibinachi(sp) sequence?
Its is known at the perfect proportion. All forms of nature have a sequence like that. Leaves, flowers, trees, ect.

2/3,3/5,5/8....ect

Mathematicians are always callculation to this day to find the most perfect proportion within this sequence.

The shape of the star is based off that sequence.

This is one of the reasons why stars are on nations flags.

The red/gold star represents Communism.
Red for the blood of the prolitariat, who fought in the revolution.
Gold for the wealth of the nation.

As for the five points--I'm not sure.

Workers, peasants, soldiers, intellectuals and students/youth. However like most symbols it has different meanings depending on who you ask.
