Homage to catalona:
I second that, though obviously it only gives a one sided percpective of events...

He even says that himself at the near end of the book, I'm going to have to re-read that one.

JKP is right, Homage to Catalonia is an essential read for anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War. From Whom The Bell Tolls - Ernest Hemingway is another must read novel. SO long as you read this along with a factual summary of the war - they both mean more if you understand what the technicalities of the war were (at least that was the case for me!)

"For Whom The Bell Tolls" isn't required reading at all. It's mostly story; the political element is quite limited. Additionally, I didn't appreciate his childish jabs at anarchists.

I would also like to second (or third?) 'Homage to Catalonia'. I actually JUST finished reading it (as I am currently writing about the civil war in school). It's a great book by one of the most important authors of our era.

Well to actually understand any situation in war you need to listen to stories - to accounts and to what people actually experienced - just reading about the politics and military doesn't help you to picture yourself there. Thats why "Homage to Catalonia" is so good - it is a balance of the personal story and the global politics.
