He was told he was going to be executed, and Perez asked him if he was a "materialist", by having requested only food.
--- What did he mean by that question?

Guevara said "perhaps", and Perez called him a "poor shit", and went outside.
--- I do not know if "poor shit" is an english expression, so, anywho, what do you think he meant?

Then right before he was to be executed, he apperently said: "Know this now, you are [only] killing a man." ---- Again, I am wondering what he thought..

What do you think?

I assume that this question was about whether Che needed to see a priest or pray before his death. A materialist would only be concerned with his last meal.

Here we have the religious expressing their contempt for the atheist. The idea being that either Guevara was going to hell or he was dying without the comfort of knowing his fate.

I suspect that this was due to some hesitation among the soldiers about killing such an iconic, even then, figure. I've heard that the soldiers drew lots to decide who would do the job.

That's my take on it anyway.
