Statement by communist and workers' parties at the international meeting in Athens, November 18-20 2005

Appeal against the extradition of Comrade Sean Garland, President of The Workers' Party of Ireland

On October 7th, the President of The Workers' Party of Ireland, Sean Garland, was arrested while attending the Party annual delegate conferance in Belfast. Comrade Garland has worked for peace and democracy in Ireland for many decades. He has been a consistent and vocal critic of the United States' quest for gobal hegemony. The attack on Sean Garland is politically motivated, based on anti-communist propaganda. The Workers' party of Ireland will not be intimidated, and calls for the support of other communist and workers' parties from throughout the world in the struggle to prevent the extradition of Sean Garland to the United States.

We express solidarity with The Workers' Party of Ireland on the arrest of their President, and oppose the attempt by the Bush regime to extradite Comrade Garland to the United States of America where it is impossible for a socialist to get a fair trial.

-----

At today's meeting in the Norwegian Communist Party (NKP), we decided that it would be a nice gesture to help spread this information. I will provide email adresses to which you can email complaints when I recieve these from Comrade Næss of NKP.

On what hyped up charges are the U$ kangeroo courts after Sean Garland?

I cannot see how the U$A would be able to label Sean Garland or the Workers Party of Ireland (WPI) as 'terrorists' as the WPI is opposed to armed actions, in Ireland, from what I know.

From what I heard, he gave monetary support to Palestinian liberation groups. I don't know if they were violent extremists, but I doubt it. Also, I can't believe I overlooked seangarland.org (http://www.seangarland.org) , which has lots of information.

WHAT!?!

Sean Garland is the Anti-Marx! He was leader of the Official IRA, a Stalinist, pathetic excuse for Ireland's defenders. The Provisional IRA split from them in the early 70's because of there laissez-faire approach to defending Catholic communities and there attempts at reformism. The IRSP/INLA also split from the OIRA in the late 70's - the IRSP/INLA was a real attempt at a socialist republican dynamic in Ireland and what happened? On Garland's orders the IRSP's political leader Séamus Costello (He of the brilliant 'My only allegiance is to the working class' quote) was gunned down.

Support this reformist, Stalinist piece of shit if you want, I'm off to the Che Guevara event being hosted by Sinn Féin... a true socialist party

Also, to the Americans/ those outside Ireland - do you know why the guy is being extradited? Because he was caught laundering money for the North Koreans (another bunch of Stalinist shits) so as to continue his comfortable lifestyle, not because of brave Marxist actions which the USA wants to put a stop to.

BTW - The IWP are teensy tiny...they have fuck all support - FUCK SEAN GARLAND! ROT IN PRISON YOU STALINIST ****!

The real outrage is that we didn't get to see a puppet of "comrade" Garland in Team America. Here's hoping for a sequel.

The problem many people have with the Workers Party (more popularly known as the Wankers' Party) isn't that they're non-violent but that they declared a ceasefire with the Brits, only to turn their guns on Irish republicans, including the Provies but most especially the IRSP. Garland was chief of staff of the OIRA when they assasinated Seamus Costello as he was delivering newspapers one morning. I have less love for Garland than I do for Thatcher to be quite honest. The unprovoked assasinations of IRSP members was the biggest factor in stunting the IRSP's growth. All because the Irps had commited the crime of being 'ultra lefts' and 'trotskyites'.

I don't know about Garland donating his money to the Palestianian cause, but I do know he's donated generously to some very posh hotels.

The interesting thing about seangarlandworship.org is that it makes no direct reference to the IRSM.

Here's the closest it comes to admitting to his unprovoked attacks on the IRSM:

He was successful with others in securing the Official IRA Ceasefire of May 1972 .The following years saw a continuous internal struggle to defeat a faction within the organisation which refused to accept the new policy as adopted by its members. A parallel struggle was taking place within Official Sinn Fein of which Sean Garland was National Organiser. In December 1974 this faction was expelled from both organisations. On 1st March 1975 Sean Garland was very seriously wounded in an assassination attempt, by Ultra Leftists opposed to the political road, when he was returning home with his wife.

It's bizarre to condemn the republican hunger strikers as criminals, then turn around and beg for political status because you were caught money laundering. Fucker.
