The deal will help tens of thousands of poorer Massachusetts residents
Officials from Venezuela and Massachusetts have signed a deal providing cheap heating oil to low-income homes in the US state.
The fuel will be sold at some 40% below market prices to thousands of homes over the winter months.
Local congressman William Delahunt described the deal as "an expression of humanitarianism at its very best".
Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez is one of the Bush administration's biggest adversaries in Latin America.
He first announced his plan to provide cheap heating oil directly to lower-income Americans while visiting Cuba in August.
'About people'
The deal involves shipping some 45m litres of heating oil from Venezuela to Massachusetts at a discounted rate via Citgo Petroleum, a US-based subsidiary of the Venezuelan state owned oil company.
At a signing ceremony in Massachusetts, Mr Delahunt - a Democrat who helped broker the deal - rejected suggestions that it was politically motivated.
"This is a gesture about people," the Associated Press news agency quotes him as saying.
"It has nothing to do, as far as I'm concerned, with anything between the Bush administration and the Chavez administration."
Talks are under way to agree a similar deal to provide discounted heating oil from Venezuela to low-income residents in New York's Bronx district.

Just when you think, you can't love Hugo Chavez any more. The man shows compassion to residents of a country that has been nothing but belligerent towards him, a true humantitarian.

I agree that the plan for Chavez to sell oil very cheap to poor communities in the U.S. But, didnt I hear about something about possible human rights violations by the Chavez administration.

Yeah, but that doesnt mean they are not true and should be totally unaccredited.

It does unless there's a second source. The White House has been lying about Chavez for a while now. Remember those baseless allegations of Venezuelan interference in Boliva?

These allegations arent just coming from the white house but from some of the Venezualan people as well who claim that human rights violations have occured against members of their family.

Well, the U$ also accuses chavez of being undemocratic. Which is farcical, i think that venezuela is probably the msot dmeocratic country in the world just now.
The only human rights claims i have seens landed agianst chavez was the beugorise moaning about chavez taking away their land or private porperty. I am glad he's doing this and dont see them as human rights abuses.

The complaints about Chavez come from wealthy Venzualans. They have have had thier heel on the throats of the poorer Venzulans forever. They are losing their power to exploit the poor and they do not like it. I doubt any of thier rights are being violated besides thier "right" to exploit. They have no sympathy from me, they are getting alot less than they deserve. I would not be suprised if it is all just CIA misinformation. The CIA have been manipulating and buying news agencies since the 50s. Google "Operation Mockingbird" for more info.

The human rights violations that I was talking about is that supposedly there was a large anti Chavez protest where the police may have beaten some of the demonstrators and the administration was slow to respond to it, or was playing the role of the ostrich in the investigation.
Thanks for the information about "Operation Mockingbird"

If any of you have bittorrent (bitlord.com), download this movie to hear the truth about the "human rights violations". They're all complete lies and this film exposes the truth about Chavez's opposition http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=The...ot+Be+Televised (http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=The+Revolution+Will+Not+Be+Televised)

Also no one was put on trial for "treason" for funding a voter's info campaign during the recall effort. The people on trial were actually put on trial for embezlement, which is a legitimate charge.
