I recently saw Paths of Glory, a film about WWI. It has an anti-war feel since it shows the injustices that the French solidiers had to go through during the trench fighting thanks to their superior officers. The story itself is not one of non-fiction, but you can bet that incidents such as the one portrayed in the film occured. The
French government thought that the story was so ridiculous and ungrounded that it did not allow Kubrick to film it in France.
Released in 1957.

That is an amazing film on every level.
I've read it is based on an actual incident from Humphrey Cobb's novel "Paths of Glory"' -- person's and places ficitionalized for the film. it was definitely written as a war critique especially in the unquestional obedience to military authority. The novel is out of print, but probably can be found at a library.
"A Midnight Clear" is another interesting anti-war film and book based on the autobiographical incident of the author, William Wharton, in WWII.

Paths of Glory is an incredible film, a devastating masterpiece that must rank as one of, if not the, best anti-war film ever made. It completely blew me away. It's saying something about Kubrick's brilliance that I only rank it as his 7th best film.
