a few people have messaged me about the involvement of the Australian New Zealand Bank [ANZ] in the Iraq Trade Consortium. unfortunately i wasn't able to get back to most of them because i didn't have the time to write up all the info. this is a small portion of it, i'll try and get some more up soon. our affinity group, mutiny, has stopped anz actions for a bit while we try and get some perspective on where we want this to go eventually and work out some kinda strategy.
anyways if after reading this you want more info [and im not able to provide it fast enough :P] feel free to email [email protected] if you're interested in actions, that email address is for nsw based peeps, [email protected] is the vic based anti-war group :)
brief intro:
During the protests against the Forbes Global CEO Confrence, anti-war protestors targeted ANZ branches across the CBD in response to the bank’s war-profiteering in Iraq.
ANZ is one of a number of international banks that form the consortium known as the Iraq Trade Bank. This institution is presented by the occupying powers as necessary for the rebuilding of a stable Iraqi economy. However, this institution (like all others imposed by the occupation forces) serves the interests of the western powers who are responsible for the deaths of over 100 00 Iraqi civilians in just two years.
The Iraqi Trade Bank serves as a lever for the economic colonisation of Iraq by foreign multinational corporations to directly profit from the exploitation of Iraq’s human and natural resources. The Iraqi market has been flooded with cheap, western commodities, and much of Iraqi industry and infrastructure has been sold to western corporations eager to make a profit from the illegal occupation. Iraq now has a 70% unemployment rate, one of the highest in the world.
Spokesperson Claire P. says “ANZ is directly making a profit from the misery of the Iraqi people through their role in the US economic exploitation of the country.
“In defiance of all capitalist-driven war we seek to disrupt “business as usual” in order to highlight the destruction caused by this collusion of business interests and government policy. In taking direct action we aim to hold ANZ accountable for their role in this system of war-profiteering.
“By targeting ANZ on this date we are also acting in solidarity with those protesting against the 2005 Forbes Global CEO Conference at the Sydney Opera House.
“Just as the systems of war and capitalism are global, so is our opposition to them, and we want to make our opposition visible here”.

ANZ: Making a Killing in Iraq
The reconstruction of Iraq is being overseen by a number of international agencies as well as the US government. Their names are familiar to those of us concerned with how corporate power affects our lives: the IMF, the World Bank, etc. Their aim is to fundamentally alter the Iraqi economy.
Attempts to force free market policies onto local economies aren’t limited to Iraq. Unlimited corporate power, a disposable labour force with no political control, all enforced through military policing: this is the neoliberal vision for the entire world.

What ANZ Says
ANZ is one of a number of international banks in a consortium led by JP Morgan Chase Bank that has been chosen by the Coalition Provisional Authority to assist the establishment of the Iraq Trade Bank. The Iraq Trade Bank is a specialist bank, which will provide trade finance services to facilitate international trade as part of Iraq’s reconstruction.
“As the leading trade finance bank in Australasia we already have extensive experience in providing trade finance support to Australian and New Zealand businesses who export to the Middle East and Iraq,” Mr Paton said. “In recent years Australasia has been among Iraq’s top three sources of imports with trade flows in excess of A$1 billion,” he said. “The formation of the Iraq Trade Bank by the Coalition Provisional Authority provides an avenue for Australian and New Zealand exporters, such as those in the grains and dairy industries, to rebuild and further develop Australia’s trade links with Iraq. This may extend to opportunities for broader trade with Iraq including assistance in rebuilding infrastructure as part of Iraq’s longer-term economic redevelopment,” Mr Paton said.
What We Say
The Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) bank has been granted a role by the occupying powers restructuring the Iraqi finance sector through the creation of the Iraqi Trade Bank. This institution is presented by the occupying powers as necessary for the rebuilding of a stable Iraqi economy.
