ATHENS, Nov. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- A group of about 40 youths threw firebombs at three bank branches in downtown Athens in the early hours of Saturday morning, the police said on Saturday.
The individuals broke the frontages of three bank branches in central Athens and threw firebombs in the interior of the bank branches, causing extensive damage, Athens News Agency reported.
The fire was extinguished by 15 firemen with three fire engines.
Police are conducting an investigation to locate and arrest theculprits, without, however, having specific data.
A spate of firebomb attacks were launched against police, government agencies and French institutes base in Greece by local anarchists, who expressed their support to the Paris riots, said the police.

These molotov-cocktail-hurling anarchists are merely giving a bad name to our movement. This violence has achieved nothing but to incite hatred of the anarchist movement throughout the world. Senseless acts of violence are not the way to go about effecting change in this world. If they wanted to show their support of the French rioters, then they could have very easily called a demonstration.
These actions are completely and totally unacceptable. While I may disagree with the successful use of violent tactics to achieve an anarchist society, I cannot tolerate actions such as these that will only cause people to impugn the logic, morality, and general decency of anarchism.

Where are you seeing that? People hate anarchists anyway, but at least these militant tactics bring attention to what we're working on. Most people are not as opposed to direct action as you might think, especially in parts of the world that aren't the United States. And whatever damage they may cause is more than made-up for when anarchists engage in various mutual aid projects.

The bourgeoisie, with the help of radical militant anarchists, have painted the image of what most persons normally associate with an anarchist: a molotov-cocktail-hurling nutjob. Whenever I tell someone I am an anarchist, she or he, more often than not, either edges away slowly or closes her or his mind immediately.
If we hope to succeed, we cannot perpetuate this image in any way, shape, or form. We must break the stereotype. We should wear anarchist insignia and at the same time help old ladies across sidewalks, and do good deeds whilst wearing anarchist symbols. Only by breaking the stereotype and disassociating ourselves from the radical militants and the culture anarchists can we win in today's never-ending propaganda war.

Tons of anarchists do these sort of things already. I don't see why we can't combine this with a bit o' direct action. In the future, maybe we should just claim we're liberals when we smash windows? :D

There are other, more effective, forms of direct actions. For example, sit-ins, walk-outs, guerrilla poster campaigns and similar forms of protest or resistance.

Sure. But attacking the capitalists' franchises and banks is a nice way to draw attention and actually get issues discussed outside of radical circles. It worked in Seattle, it worked in Argentina, it worked in Genoa, it worked in Sweden. And so on.
For example, sit-ins
How is getting arrested and fined beneficial to anybody?
walk-outs
Leading to what? Just walking out doesn't accomplish much, unless you're talking a general strike or something.
guerrilla poster campaigns
More effective than smashing them directly? I doubt it. Posters are good, but they're not particularly effective unless there's something local and direct for them to bring people around to.
