Okay, this is undoubtedly a stupid question, but I promised a friend I'd look into it...

What will happen to the diamond trade in a Communist society? I mean, would we still have diamonds, and if so, would we all have equal amounts?
Or would we simply get rid of them, as they are a sign of capitalist wealth and therefore have a reactionary influence?

I know this isn't exactly one of the more pressing issues, but the question was brought up in a conversation with a friend (please don't ask how) and I had to admit that I wasn't quite sure.

Of course we would still have diamonds. They would be used for cutting really hard materials. One thing I don't like about diamonds is the way they are mined. The process can be very damaging to the environment. In communism people could still look beautiful if they want to. Synthetic diamonds (which have the same crystal struture) would be produced to make them available to everyone. It would be impossible to tell the real ones from the fake (real) ones. I think that the mining of diamonds would probaly top because of the effects it can have on people.
