The late 1970's in Italy are known as the "Years of Lead," due to the extreme number of armed actions that occured in the country during the period, on both the right and left. They began, generally speaking, with fascists bombing two plazas in an attempt to force a government crackdown on left-wing extremists. Evidently, they wanted to force a military takeover, similar to what occured in Greece. There was a great deal of social discontent in Italy at the time, as capitalism was in a crisis there.

A number of armed cells sprang up and carried out a number of actions. There were also a lot of demonstrations, riots, etc and autonomous armed actions outside of the organized cells. A number of demonstrators began attending armed, although not using their weapons.

In the photo in question, I believe there had been a ban on demonstrations that day, to a particular spot, but one was called anyway. The organizers planned it as a nonviolent event, but a group of demonstrators broke off from the main march and headed towards the police line. There was a standoff, molotovs and other objects were thrown and then the police fired. The breakaway demonstrators returned fire and quickly fled the scene. I believe one demonstrator and one police officer were killed in the exchange.

The books Armed Struggle in Italy 1976-78 and Memoirs of an Italian Terrorist offer a good, leftist introduction to the topic.

Well the facts are that workers were fighting Deng's reforms, the students were fighting the beurocracy and the intelligentsia were fighting for more freedom of expression

I don't see how any of these things were bad from a Socialist perspective

Also, the protestors were waving red flags and singing the Internationale, something you musn't have heard about through the Chinese or Beurgeois media

In a protest against the brutal US backed leader of S. Vietnam Diem the monk set himself on fire...

The run up to it was something along the lines of Diem being Roman Catholic and persecuting other religious groups in S. Vietnam... Or something to that effect, it's been a while since I studied the Vietnam war

Diem was a roman catholic in a largely buddhist country and was replacing buddhists in government with catholics, hitler style.
