Statement on Death of Basque Prisoner

The Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America condemn and
would like to draw attention to the torture and murder of Basque
prisoner Jose Anjel Altzuguren.

Altzuguren was arrested unexpectedly by the Civil Guard on October
22nd, although he was still awaiting an appeal under release.
Altzuguren was originally charged with aiding the ETA. During the time
he was incarcerated he was tortured. By arresting him unexpectedly,
Altzuguren was unable to continue his medical treatment for diagnosed
depression and trauma as a result of the torture he experienced while
in Spanish custody.

After being imprisoned, Altzuguren was put into solitary confinement,
against normal prison procedure for a person suffering a psychiatric
illness. At 8:00 AM on October 31st, Altzuguren was found dead, a bed
sheet wrapped around his neck serving as a noose. As a spokesperson
for Askatasuna, a prisoner amnesty association, stated, "they applied
the death protocol to him."

It is disturbing that the 'socialist' government headed by PSOE is
increasing the criminalisation of Basque prisoners even as the desire
for conflict resolution grows. It is a disgrace that the failed policy
of the fascist Franco state is still practiced by a Spanish government
in the 21st century.

This is a disgrace, how can they get away with this sort of shit? - My Dad's Basque friend was once arrested by the former government and had a bag put over his head and water-tortured (so as not to leave marks) for a week because he was accused of assisting ETA (he edits the Basque seperatist newspaper 'Berria')
