So SPORT it is conpepative, and in sports like martial arts there is diffrent rankings! Surely every one is equal in a commie society?

It just came to me so any one have an answer or tell me your opinions!

Lol, are we getting technical here?! Sport is sport, politics is politics, lets keep the two separate. Someone being better at karate than someone else doesn't affect much does it.

I disagree when you are at diffrent levels this causes conflict! :hammer:

Communist nations across the world have always been and are famous for the prestige they give to their sportspeople. Sporting victories and achievements are celebrated as successes of the state.

Oy, there has never been a communist nation...But anyway, sport doesn't create conflict like say..class divisions. You csn say the same thing about athletics - one person runs faster than another, so lets both run slower. If people thought like that, world records wouldn't get broken.

I think it is okay to have 'ranks' in sports. This is because who ever wins the competition and whoever holds up the trophy or belt or whatever, at then end of the day they are equal members of society and are treated equally.

WHat about ranks in martial arts, because the older wiser people get to order around the lower ranking people, having that power might mess things up? Give me your toughts... :hammer:

The younger people volunteer for to learn the art, the only reason the wise person is bossing them about is to make them better at that martial art. He isn't working them to the bone.

Some people are better athletes than others.

the former "Communist" countries like the Soviet Union and Romania had great gymnastics teams, they put a lot into sports. Communism does not mean you can't have athletes that are better than others. However, it does mean that people like Manny Ramirez cant be making $20 million a year for it.

Sport is a recreation, not necessarily meant for competition, rather exercise and entertainment.

Yes...but I think in a society where you don't compete in sports for fear of making someone feel inferior to another is taking the idea of 'equality' WAY to far! :D

Jesus effing christ. Communism means equality in terms of socio-political-economic status. Not everything. If everyone had to be equal in everything, the musicians would be required to sound horrible, and the athletes would be required to play poorly. To require the elimination of rankings in martial arts would be to do one of the most asinine things I can think of.

And dear GOD, learn to spell.

The thing with sports right now is that people only think that the profesional leagues (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB etc) represent all that sports has to offer. These are rich, selfish athleletes that get paid millions to endorse sporting companies that make millions by exploiting labour overseas. Real sport, ie, local leagues, independant clubs or even just playing shinny in your backyard ice rink or a game of ball on the street is true to sports because thats all that matters, the game, not the money.

Of course there is jealousy and competition within sports, but thats the point. it has to do with excelling yourself, pushing yourself to be the best you can be, not being the best at earning millions of dollars. Sports has nothing to do with competion in society, this is only the case in capitalism where all that is conserned about is the cash.

In short,
Competition in sports = achiveving goals and becoming a better player
Competition in capitalist society = making money
Combine the two you get what we have now: professional sports

Theres nothing wrong with sports. Or competition

We'll have competition in communism too you know.

The difference is, losing won't mean starving at the end of the day.

i disagree with the idea that competition is a necessary and good thing.
competition in any form is indulgence in pride and selfishness.

hopefully, in communist society, the dissolution of all traditional power structures - mainly economic and material relations - will lead to a general change in the most basic morality of mankind as a whole...

call me a christian, but i do believe that sincere altruism and selflessness are essential to the successful establishment of a society where man is free to labor as he wishes, pursue his natural creative inclinations....generally, realize himself as a person, rather than on object.

anyway, there is a very interesting essay by george orwell pertaining specifically to sport. it is entitled "the sporting spirit." (i would link it, but i'm not sure if i'm allowed to?). if you don't want to read the whole thing (though it is really short), here are some quotes that i think summed up the basic idea (emphasis added):

"Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting."

"There cannot be much doubt that the whole thing is bound up with the rise of nationalism — that is, with the lunatic modern habit of identifying oneself with large power units and seeing everything in terms of competitive prestige. Also, organised games are more likely to flourish in urban communities where the average human being lives a sedentary or at least a confined life, and does not get much opportunity for creative labour."

of course, he is discussing, for the most part, nationalism... and, in the communist world we will assume there will be no nations. but that does not mean that what he calls "serious sport" will produce sentiments resembling nationalism, regionalism, patriotism, etc. - generally, reactionary arrogance. note that his base criticism of sport has little to do with its role in capitalist society, but rather its role in arousing the competitive, savage, greedy sentiments in man....all characteristics of the capitalist system...
