Socialism theoretically should encompass some form of direct democracy, i.e. everyone takes an active part in political life, rather than just electing representatives. In places like Russia and China, however, supposedly socialist revolutions have soon ended up as dictatorships...

Exactly. Though notice these were just self-proclaimed "socialist" revolutions and their true Marxist intentions can be debated.

I don't think you can have real democracy without workers power (since we don't get a vote in bourgoise democracy of how production happens or what are jobs are like or any other important things that effect our daily lives) or workers power without democracy.

Socialism is rule by workers, and since it is the majority class, doemocratic voting and structures would probably be the best way for workers to make decisions.

I think there would definately have to be democratic decision making in workplaces as well as in neighborhoods and any larger governmental structures.

I think Marx and Engles definately saw socilism as a contuinuation and expansion of earlier democratic struggles.
