View Full Version : I'm afraid I've lost hope

It's been quite a while since I was last actively posting here.
It seems that I've lost hope.
When I first came into contact with leftist ideals through my reading, I jumped in with enthusiasm. Everything I read provided new and fascinating view points on economics, equity, and the mystery of human existence at large. From my readings, I began forming my own opinions. I was filled with a sense of purpose, in trying to show the world the possibilities that socialism had to offer. I debated, campaigned, joined the leftist club at our school (5 members, 2 of which were kidiot @
[email protected]!). And I achieved nothing. Zip. With rare exception, I have found, people simply don't care enough to educate themselves, to crack open a book and read, to really listen to what someone has to say. No, they prefer to remain intelectually docile, occupying themselves with trivial, material pursuits and pleasures.
After hearing the same stupid arguements ("human nature", for example), after having my views shot down without any consideration at all, after going toe to toe with more than my fair share of skinheads, I realize I've had no impact. I mean, I feel that I have bettered myself, disposed of many of my former incorrect assumptions I had on the world, and attained a better method of viewing the world, and surely that's worth something, but every attempt I've made to influence and better the world around me has been fruitless.

If you lose hope and give up reinvigorate yourself. You know what you stand for you know what you believe. By giving up you are letting yourself get overcome by idiots around you. You need to stand firm and practice what you say, you need to continue to do so otherwise you may be seen as weak. Stay strong and have faith if you honestly believe in what you say then your words and continuation of spreading the word should keep you strong. Find new ways and new appraoches to confront the non-believers so you can get their attention. You can do it.
I may be new here but do not give up the good fight!

I know why you have failed, you have been trying to "teach" the wrong people, the bourgeois proletarians, not the real proletarians.
The bourgeois proletarians are "workers" who live in the sub-urbs, own 2 cars, have a huge house and a "materially great life", don't try to teach them shit, most of them are christian Bush loving retards.
Instead go to the cities, and teach the people who want to be taught, the people who have no other future other then being a wage-slave for all their lifes.
I am assuming you're in the US, if you're in Canada or western-Europe it's gotta be worse.

Anti-Capitalist,
We all have doubts regarding our beliefs, knowledge. You shall, in the words of Lenin "have to stand firm, strain every nerve". For example, when you're out leafleting the streets with propaganda you are staring human ignorance in face. You see it, smell it and you don't like it. I’ve done it before. I’ve gone home, slumped onto me bed and thought, “what the hell was I thinking?”, “maybe I’m wrong, maybe I have too much faith in humanity”. You can't expect immediate results from what you're learning and giving because you shouldn't expect everyone else around you to be able to take on board the theory of Marxism. It's far easier to be a nationalist or to be religious, with both the former and the latter you will find immediate results. I don't mean to patronise anybody but people find it easier to take life at face value. They think that they have security. They think that history has been ended by capitalism. We, on the other had, see a completely different side to the story. When we try to explain things from a Marxist point of view people think that we are talking about fairytales.
Working Class Hero
John Lennon
As soon as your born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religon, sex and T.V.
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasents as far as I can see
Working Class Hero is something to be
Working Class Hero is something to be
There's room at the top I'm telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
Working Class Hero is something to be
Yes , A Working Class Hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Yeah, seriously, Jesus??
Anyway, I think a comrade has nailed your problem on the head: you're trying to educate materialistic, bourgeois, capitalist pigs, who know no other pleasure than that which money can provide. I'm guessing many of the kids you've talked to are rich. That's just hopeless. The rich have no reason to oppose capitalism, they should be defending it. But if you reach the real proletarians, not bourgeois scum, you'll find that many of them agree with Marxist and communist ideas, they just aren't too fond of the label 'Marxist' or 'communist' (because of what they were 'taught' in school, probably).

If you are trying to move a huge lump immediately you will spent your enthusiasm rather than you do it.
But if you will push the lump with your finger for a long time you very likely would get a possibility to move the lump.
Note: A huge lump just as individual's consciousness have inertia :D

I very much appreciate your advice. In many cases, you were correct.
I have lived most of my life in a working class neighborhood, and relatively recently (2 years ago), moved to quite a rich one. I'm basically daily disgusted by shallowness, ignorance, and selfishness.
Though, I can't deny that some good came from the move. In many ways, my leftist political ideology came about after seeing the huge differences in the two communities, after recoiling from capitalism, I went in search of alternative systems, and here I am today. I haven't had much effect in my efforts to change the world, but I've bettered myself quite a bit.
One question: I live in an isolated, rich community, that lacks sidewalks, and I don't own a car. Is there anything I can do within this community?

Good topic, this just reinvigorated me to once again speak out against capitalism after a phase of simply hating humans in general and losing ALL faith.
One question: I live in an isolated, rich community, that lacks sidewalks, and I don't own a car. Is there anything I can do within this community?
Yes. Take advantage of your situation. That community has money, take it from them. Have them give it to you, collect donations to fight "poverty" but dont be specific as to the fact you are giving them to fight american capitalism, which has created the poverty. Do not lie, just dont blurt out the truth. Then you continually engage in political discussion AND dont give into the commodities shoved in your face.

I think you're wrong there. My parents also live in the sub-urbs and own 2 cars, and so on, and I live with my parents. Does it make me a Bush loving retard?
I don't think so, I'm a communist as much as you, I believe in the same things as you do. I can't help it if my parents don't think the same way I do. It's true that most people who live in my street are capitalist pigs but were not all like that.

Do not loose hope! I can understand what you feel however... There is a young political group that seems to be firing up - get involved! I think it is important to accept (cynical and cruel as it is) that WE cannot change the entire world - we cannot, at least it is highly unlikely, start a New World Revolution. We can, however, change something! Whether it be that you raise a child well - who will continue to struggle as we do - or whether you change/fight a law - you are doing something to help! (Sounds a bit clichéd - sorry!) We can pull together and change the small lives around us - maybe it will have a massive impact and change the world, maybe it won't - but we will have done something!!
(Uhh so much Cliché - extremly sorry!!)

Persevere. . . and one way to persevere is to immerse with the masses, the working class. Live with them and their tribulations in the daily grind and know their life pulses. Then organize and mobilize them and you'll see that the workers in action is a well spring of inspiration.
But always remember: revolution or changing society is no dinner party.
