I am David, a Social Liberal living in Derbyshire, England. I am active in the Liberal Democrats. I have joined these forums out of an interest in the far Left and its history.

EDIT::- I hope my posting outside the 'opposing ideologies' section is not resented comrades

There must be levels here of which I am not aware. We have in America liberal Democrats, but not LibDems. Do they bite?

Erm, just a question on LibDems... you propose Council Tax cuts to save every working family £450 per year, give pensioners an extra £100 a month, 10,000 more police officers and better equip the current ones... and if you got to power you'd only increase tax for those who earn over £100,000. You do you suggest we do all this?

Welcome to the boards, but please don't call 'us' 'comrades' :)

TheLiberal

In response to ScottishPinko:

you propose Council Tax cuts to save every working family £450 per year,

The Liberal Democrats propose a local income tax based on income rather than the value of property. This will on average benefit 'working' families, especially those with single incomes.

10,000 more police officers and better equip the current ones...

This is an issue of restructuring the police force and favouring time 'on the street' over paperwork. The 10 000 figure is related to Labour's ID card scheme, which if scrapped could fund 10 000 more police office.

and if you got to power you'd only increase tax for those who earn over £100,000. You do you suggest we do all this?

The top rate of tax would fund the abolition of tuition fees, free personal care for the elderly and the transition to Local Income Tax

Well how much would you actually increase it? You seem to be able to draw a lot of money out of one tax increase.

TheLiberal
8th November 2005, 16:43
The increase would be from 50p to 60p on every pound earnt, for those earning over £100 000. It is estimated that had this tax been in place 2005/6 it would have generated £4000m revenue over the current tax.

I am not a Party person - I follow ideals - but in the last general election I do admit that I would have voted LibDem because they are the most sensible - most leftist party in the UK (besides CPGB but I don't think they even had a candidate, anywhere.)

SSP, SWP, ans RESPECT, are all to the left of libdems and ssp and respect deffinatley ran candidates in some seets.

There's the socialsit party as well, i think they run in some parts of england.

TheLiberal

RESPECT is simply a tool for self promotion of George Galloway and has alienated the electorate with its pessemistic, cynical attitude. I understand that most of the other far left parties do not stand where there is a RESPECT candidate anyway.

Better respect than the lib dems......

I don't like Galloway mutch, but at least he claims to be a socialist, and I was impressed by his senate performance.

I agree (with Clenched Fist) - but where I live the Libdems are the most liberal - Tory, Labour, Lib Dem, UKIP ( ,) Monster Raving Looney Party ( ) and some Independent man who got 5 (!!) votes - probably just his family - even then not all of them!! Anyway - as you can see there is little choice....Tories won too so...terrible, terrible!!
