Greetings Comrades! I can't believe I'd never found this site before, such an amazing collection of like-minded people! Basically, since about aged 11, I've been building up polictial views, all of which have turned out to be extreme left. I obviously have a very large interest in politics and philosophy. (My mom did degrees in philosophy and theology, so in many ways I've be brought up with an interest.) Its got to a point now where no-one in my family will want to have a policital debate with me, thats not to say I "win," but rather that I simply won't drop it, I'll continue to argue my point until they walk away.
I'm in secondary school (English name for high school,) and sadly, the vast magority of people have very uninformed views on things. Amoung my friends, who are all academically intelligent people, it is not uncommon to hear "Well, Iraq deserved it for September 11th." Of course, I try and correct these people, but they often become bored and will just ignore it. Also, I'm very saddened by the racist slurs that will be said now and then. The thing is, people often come from homes where I suspect their parents (particually dad) will be racist, therefore passing it onto his children. Again, I'll always argue against this, but people will become bored, and uninterested in any reasonable view. This is not to say that these people are stupid or "don't get it," it's just the way many teenagers are brought up I guess. Rather than research politics, they'll hear their Dad's say racist things, and the other crap that the media throws at them, (Saddam has "links" to 9/11)
On the topic of school, I'm often appaled by the way History is taught. For example, on the topic of the Nazis, it will be said that the Nazis "saved" Germany from communism. SAVED? The textbook takes the immediate assumption that communism is some bad! Communism, a political structure and philosophical thinking, used throughout the modern world, and a country was "saved" from it? This is just one example of the capitalist propoganda that litters education.
Another trouble that can arrise at school is the right-wing teacher problem. One such example was my previous geography teacher, a right-wing racist. Of course, he can't openly be racist, but it becomes clear when he picks on the asian kids, and talks of how the middle-east "abuses" the west, and that they should be nuked. No, I'm not exagerating what he honestly says. He says that afganistan should be nuked because it's poppy fields "abuse" the west. Hmm, a country should have its population wiped out because it exports flowers which undermine the proabition of drugs in this country. This is the mentallity of the man.
Another time, the topic of the Iraq war was raised, and of course, he was in favour. I was the only person in the class who was not impressed by his bullshit, and argued with him. I said, among other things, "the war is illegal." He replied, in a war situation, there is no "illegal." "Well, according to the UN, which America is part of, and created to prevent World War 3, there IS an illegal war." He, clearly with nothing to reply, said "oh, you clearly don't know what you're talking about," and then refused to debate any further. I'm no longer in this man's class, which in some ways is good, as I no longer have to listen to him, but in other ways bad, as I now cannot argue with him, and rip apart his right-wing nonsense. The sad thing is, his right-wing "views" are being TAUGHT in a school, as if they are facts within the Geography curriculum.
Wow, long post, though I spose a good introduction to me, and the struggle I fight within a middle-class grammar school. One mind at a time, the liberation of the left can be spread. Thank you comrades; Strength in our unity!
