Basically, some people in the military and CIA decided they needed a source of untrace-able money with which to fund the nefarious activities of the Contra death squads they were funding in Nicaragua. They wanted them to keep killing civilians, but they didn't want to tell congress about it, so they couldn't ask for much money without explaining more things than they wanted.

The solution? Sell weapons to Iran, an enemy state under heavy sanctions, and use the profits of this to fund the murder of civilians in Nicaragua.

I think the most shocking thing is that both the ends AND the means were so immoral.

They funded Contra because Contra were an extreme right-wing group fighting an leftist group called the Sandinistas. The U.S. didn't want another nation under a communist regime on their 'door step'.

The two people put on trial for the scenario were Poindexter and another person whose name escapes me at the moment (mills?, woodhouse? something like that). One of them got odd while the other was jailed for 5 years. They both were equally responsible however the one who went free said he did it 'right or wrong for my country' - he got a lot of sympathy for that.

It was ridiculous trial, you are allowed to get away with a crime as long as you had patriotism in mind.

That son of a *****. Now he's on Fox news with his "war stories" program. Fuckin ****. I don't know how people can watch this guy, knowing that the blood of countless innocents is on his hands, and not put a brick thru their t.v.
