After Hurricane Dennis pummeled the island in July, Castro expressed gratitude for Washington's offer of $50,000 in aid but rejected it.

I thought Castro was actually somewhat irritated or even furious, saying that Cuba does not need U.S. money, and that if they wanted to help Cuba, they could have ended the blockade?

This is America's ignorance at best. We can have nice economic deals with fascist dictators in Latin America, with the fascist oil barons in Saudi Arabia, but we cannot forget the past and form a new relationship with the Cubans. They are probily one of the best socialist goverments to establish themselfs, they cut illiteracy by 22%, they stopped wide spread faminie amongst the peasants of Cuba and pretty much are way better to their people than we will ever be.
- Cuba also sent more doctors to the Kashmir earthquake stricken region of Pakistan and India than we did.
- They sent thousands of aid workers to New Orleans
Its obvious these are our freindly neighbors.

This is a little out of topic, isn't it?
- Cuba also sent more doctors to the Kashmir earthquake stricken region of Pakistan and India than we did.
Link?
- They sent thousands of aid workers to New Orleans
As far as I can recall, not a single doctor was sent, due to U.S. refusal to let them in.
Anyways, is AP rewriting the story here?

Nope, they didn't accept, but here's the original article.
Venezuela and Cuba Offer Aid To Katrina Victims (http://freepeoplesmovement.org/fp14d.html)
Anyways, is AP rewriting the story here?
Not really. The U.S. did offer 50,000 (WTF 50,000??) and Cuba did not accept. It's not the first time that's happened. Cuba has always declined and said, as you've pointed out, if you want to "aid" Cuba, end the economic blocade.
The ridiculous part is why they mentioned it at all. Trying to make the U.S. look like good samaritans and Cuba look like the bad guys.

Thank you, CompaneroDeLibertad.
What I reacted to was:
"Castro expressed gratitude for Washington's offer". Now, Castro instead criticized the United States, and yet AP claims Fidel expressed gratitude. A correct definition of gratitude could be.... A feeling of thankfulness and appreciation?
But it didn't seem like that was what Castro felt or expressed gratitude when he heard of the "offer" of the United States. It seems... At least to me, quite the opposite.
