View Full Version : Starting Something at School
DisIllusion

I want to get a Anarcho-Socialist movement or club started at my high school, but the problem is that i'm one of the only two Anarcho-Socialists that I know at my school, plus the other one is moving to Seattle. So could anybody give me some ideas or help on how to get a political group of this sort off the ground? There are other political clubs, like California Young Democrats and California Young Republicans, but those guys are all stuck-up, bourgeois, capitalist bastards. So what i'm asking is basically how should I get it started? To whom should I reach out to? What kind of people should join? And most importantly, how do I change people to Anarchism or Socialism.

I know this is pessemistic, but whatever.
I don't think you have a high chance of creating such a group directly in your school. I imagine that the vast majority of your peers will be disinterested or even hostile towards the notions, and I doubt that any of your teachers would want to host the club either. I'd say that you best bet would be starting some type of smaller and more informal group with no ties to the school, which will only limit your organization's opportunities anyways..

Yeah that's true, most of the kids here aren't exactly politically aware. As for the finding a teacher to host it, I did have a teacher in mind who is pretty open-minded and attends protests in San Francisco regularly. But yeah maybe you're right about having it outside of school. Thanks comrade.

hey dude, never give up. castro and guevara went against a national army and won, russia had to defend the revolution against many countries in the early years and late. i know i'm no where near you geographically but i'd support you in any way i can.

Hey, it is a great idea, and you don't have to be pesimistic. I have quite a few friends now that are politically aware, and strongly left leaning.
One of the easiest groups to attract, although it depends on your school, is stoners. Of course this may not be an ideal base, but drug takers tend to want liberalisation at least and generally more so.
A few hippies would be handy if you can find them, I am not trying to use derogatory terms here, just accessable ones.
I got to broader audience though when I had a fair trade day arranged at the school. Local organisation often have a budget for this and can provide free chocolate and the likes. That was the favourite really...everyone was interested where free chocolate came from.
I noticed a lot of people change habits and become generally more aware. Most of them tended to be interested in really improving life and poking fun at the hypocrisy of everything. Most people want to believe communism but assume it is impossible.
I had a few meetings after this, whereas I was initially the only one of my kind to start. Reach out to people on a level they get and bring in semantics later.
