Any fans of this film? It's probably one of my favorites. Contrary to the common belief that this is just some cool-looking action movie about humans fighting aliens, the movie is filled with social undertones and it seems to be depicting some fascistictic world government engaging in ceaseless warfare with insects for no beneficial purpose.

I liked it as well. It seems as though it's some strange blend of the Roman Republic and 1984. Did you notice how the brain bug was shaped like a giant oozing vagina, or was that just me?

No, I saw that too.

As a movie, it was just another brainless bug-blasting fic satirising fascist governments. It's obvious that Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers is an unsophisticated criticism of Heinlein's original idea.
Couple of interesting articles on it here:
A page comparing the movie and the book (http://www.kentaurus.com/troopers.htm)
An essay criticising the book and the ideas behind it. (http://flag.blackened.net/liberty/moorcock.html)

I really liked it, I rented it a couple of years ago, thought it was just some Hollywood brain-number but it tuned out to be one of the most socially-aware films I've seen. It's class :D

 Definetly not
It was directed by Paul Verhoeven, what do you expect?
It's a entertaining and somewhat intelligent film, I think.

It is a great movie, I've seen it a few times and still it doesn't bore me.

I enjoyed it. It does not have a place in my ever growing collection of classics but it was quite amuzing.

Have any of you seen starship troopers 2?
Some troopers find an abandoned outpost to hide from the bugs. They find some hero tropper who murdered his superior cos he was an idiot (sent troopers to die)
Better plot than the first but just not as good it doesn't have any decent battle scenes.

Yeah, I always thought that the bugs did not have the ability to hit Earth with a meteor, and that it was purposely launched by the Federation in order to create support for war.

No offence, but I think your mate needs to have his head checked. To call a world where the only way to attain full citizenship is by joining the military and fighting some suicidal war perfect is fascistic in my estimation. I hope it was just a case where he wasn't paying very close attention to the political overtones of it.

I hope you realize I was being sarcastic. I haven't read the book, which may imply some political thoughts (as any crappy hollywood script does) but you are exaggerating the political impact of this lousy film

I thought that some of the uniforms were very similar to the ones in nazy germany during the war! that kinda freaked me out! and most of it seemed a bit too hollywood-ish to me! for example "ill die for the sarge, well all die for him, hes the greatest" bu fucking hu!
