It would be so nice if somebody put together a guide to help aspiring leftists present their points of view clearly and concisely and be able to back them up.

Every so often, we get questions like "how do I respond to xxx"

Debating in person isn't like the board. I take a long time to think out what I'm going to say and it usually comes out pretty well. I feel as though after a good 2 odd years I've really began grasping communist theory. But when I argue with people it's really hard.

In particular, I need good openings. A way to "frame" the discussion where we move away from communism=totalitarian police state to industrial democracy, increased equality and rights, less alienation and fuller style of living, etc.

Once I get started, or I pick up discussions with people already knowledge in leftist thinking (this board is perfect example of that), I have no problems what so ever. With somebody who has no clue, it is much more difficult.

I like Redstar's guide to stupid cappie arguments.

It is, although, far from all encompassing.

Perhaps it's time to start a new board project/sticky? We should accumulate all good arguments given so far (I can think of some right now) and compile them into one document. The search function is at times tedious and doesn't always give you the best results.

This can't possibly anticipate all arguments ever. I think the most helpful resource (googling for something like this right now) would be a general guide to debating and making logic arguments. Its not so much that I don't have the information to debate with, its just that I don't know how to think and speak in a particularly debate-like manner.

Best way to develop debate skills is to practice.

I'm thinking about joing my schools debate team so I could debate cappies better at my school. I just realized, does my school even have a debate team? They better! I often times run into informal debates wth people and I realize I need more time to think out clearly what I'm going to say. Sometimes I say the wrong thing, I regret that later on.
