The New Zealand version of the IRS is set to trial the use of linux - full article thru the link. anyone know if this is happening in other parts of the world?
Inland Revenue is trialling Linux on a handful of its 7000 personal computers and expects to decide next year whether to become the first government department to take a big punt on open source desktop software. (http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3452696a28,00.html)

The fact that another government agency is not using Microsoft (in at least some sections), is a Good Thing . That is why people might care what they are doing.
(Free Software is great, it is real good. I wish the Hurd would work real good.)
(See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/philosophy.html and read it all (except maybe the bit about GIFs).)

If more and more governments switch to linux as opposed to microsoft, it will bring OS software up to gigantic levels, which would be good for the consumers.

I care.
I think its great news, though that link about Cuba was in May, wonder what has progressed since then, anyone know?
The real step forward will be when Linux really comes to the average joe on the street, I mean, Linux is good (I use it myself) but can be a bit difficult for the average computer user.
Linux needs to improve, yes you have emulators to use windows programs but that doesnt work for ALL programs expecially games (championship manager comes to mind)
The best Linux at the moment for the average user is probably Linspire (formally known as Lindows).
