three students have been arrested at various stop vsu rallies this year, one at the actual rally, one on campus [3 weeks later] and one when he was walking home [5 weeks later]. their court trials were today, and so we had a speak out. young liberals [uni students who support the neoconservative Liberal Party of australia] turned out in an attempt to provoke us into violence in front of the media. it was fucking hilarious, about 30-35 of us lefties on one side of the road with about 15 of them on the other side, cops in between. turned into an awesome debate, with people speaking from our side about the 'wars' on afghanistan and iraq [which they said they supported], mandatory detention of refugees, ir reforms, heaps of stuff, and all they could counter with was 'thats not relevant!" and 'GO VSU!'
at one stage one of the speakers from our side mentioned an incident which had occurred at uni elections at melbourne uni, where a young iraqi woman wearing a scarf went up to the liberals election stall and tried to engage them in conversation about the occupation of iraq. they responded with "We're GLAD that babies are dying in iraq, you terrorist!"
they didn't even bother to deny it [cos it was TRUE] and they just said 'what has that got to do with anything? we support our troops!' FUCKERS
anyway enough talk. more photos.
