I was thinking of some ways that left wing governments could begin the constructing of socialism. how about this: Why not take all of the corporate taxes collected by the state from private corporations and use that money to create state and community owned businesses run by workers and their unions? Billions of dollars in corporate taxes are collected int he US every year. After about 10 years of investing all of these tax monies into publicly owned businesses, a formidle socialist sector could appear in the economy.

Also, a strong progressive tax could be put in place to create a strong welfare state for the people while the socialist sector is created. I would immediately abolish the health insurance industry and create single payer healthcare. I would also cut pentagon funding and use the money saved from the pentagon to build a comprehensive state owned transportation system in the US. The corporate taxes used to create the socialist sector would be under the control of central planning to determine what industries should be developed first.

In order to do that you'd already have to be in power wouldn't you...obviously the capitalists aren't going to be thrilled at that idea...and if you were in power then you wouldn't need to do something like that you could just nationalize corporations and give them to their workers directly.

I know that Huey Long would have installed a programme not unsimilar from that, even though we was a populist of a type you will probably very much of in Latin America.
