since capsicum spray is the weapon of choice for the po-lees here in oz, i decided to look some stuff up about it.

firstly, don't wear contact lenses. really, really bad fucking idea.

secondly, well the rest i'll get off this site: http://www.endtimesreport.com/adviceprotesters.html

What you should know about Capsicum Spray

[i]Who Should Avoid the Risk of Capsicum Spray:

- Those with asthma, respiratory problems or infections, pregnant women, women attempting to get pregnant, anyone ill or with a poor immune system, seizure disorders, eye infections, contact lens wearers, and children.

Capsicum Spray Concerns

Since Capsicum spray is often sprayed at a close distance, the police may try to:

- Physically remove your goggles/ breathing protection.
- Spray between your face and your goggles/mask [which if your hands are locked down, makes them a trap for the chemical]
- Reaction to chemical exposure will be greater with the presence of some skin conditions such as acne or severe eczema.
- Contact lenes trap the irritating gases and chemical compounds underneath them and may increase the amount of damage and irritation. GET PRESCRIPTION GLASSES NOW AND WARN OTHERS NOT TO WEAR CONTACT LENSES.
- It can be hazardous. People have died from respiratory failure.
- Asthmatics should bring their Ventilin pump

What to do when you get gassed or Capsicum sprayed without a mask

The first and most important thing to remember is to relax! If you are well prepared mentally and have essential supplies and knowledge, you will probably not need our medical assistance. Fear and confusion are the State's major weapon. Confidence, determination, preparation and awareness of your strength is your best weapon.

FIRST, DO NO HARM.

Make sure you apply treatments within your ability and understanding level. Recognize your limits. Ask for or refer to someone more experienced when needed. Experienced health workers know that asking for help is often absolutely essential.

- Wipes may be clean cloth, gauze, 4x4s etc. .
- Water may have 4 drops per litre of homeopathic Rescue Remedy added.
- Normal Saline (0.9% sodium solution) may be substituted for water used for flushing eyes or cleaning wounds.

GENERAL TREATMENT FOR CAPSICUM SPRAY (OC)

BEFORE

- Practice first aid treatments before the action on each other so:
- You get experienced before you need to do treatments during an intense situation.
- You know what the treatment feels like.
- All water for cleaning, rinsing and drinking can contain homeopathic Rescue Remedy, 2-4 drops per litre.

DURING

- Stay calm and focused.
- When your body heats up [from running or panicking, for example], the irritation may increase. Part of the reason is that your pours will open allowing more absorption of the chemicals.
- Make your way to a safe space with fresh air where unexposed folks can help you, or at least ensure your safety while you treat yourself.
- Face into the wind, open eyes, hold arms out and walk around to let fresh air decontaminate you. Take slow deep breaths of clean air.
- Don’t touch your eyes or your face, as you may re-contaminate yourself.
- Blow your nose, spit out chemicals.
- If there is wet Capsicum spray on skin, pad/sponge it up with cloth without spreading it around. If you move the oily chemical around the skin, you increase the area of painful skin.
- Before you assist or treat anyone, ask them for permission first! Then explain to them what you are going to do before you do it.
- Wear clean gloves [mutual protection from contamination] and eye protection, or you will end up unable to help and in need of treatment yourself - the blowback and splashing from administering some of the treatments can be wicked!
- Best if cleaning solutions and water spill directly to ground so as to not contaminate clean skin, clothes or hair.
- Store contaminated wipes in a sealed bag.

AFTERWARDS

- Decontaminate with a cold shower [keeps pores closed preventing chemicalsfrom entering skin]
- Exchange contaminated clothing for fresh.
- Be aware that entering into a room with contaminated cloths, hair & skin reeking of chemicals will contaminate the room.
- A contaminated room with carpets or textiles on furniture may reek for weeks.
- If possible, please change out of contaminated garments before entering enclosed spaces such as convergence and treatment areas.
- Place contaminated clothes in bag. Squeeze out air. Seal it so the gases will diffuse out more slowly. If you want the clothes back, mark bag with a name.

PREVENTION: Wash before with pH neutral soap. Cover up with water repellent clothes & gear. Don’t wear contact lenses, make-up, moisturizers or vegetable/mineral oil-based cream. Don’t use Vaseline or mineral oil as skin barrier. Use gas mask, respirators, sealed [swim] goggles, and/or vinegar or lemon juice-soaked bandanna over mouth/nose.

The youth liaison officer told us to use baby shampoo to wash it out. That's what the police use when they go through training and get sprayed.

She also said make sure you wash it out of your hair.

hot sauce in a spray bottle would work, pretty much anything sprayed out of those aresol cans will probably work and rubbing alcohol, though they wouldn't affect the skin. spray paint in the eyes will really fuck you up. oh and you can just buy pepperspray, in a very concealable bottle.

Contacts are horrible. I got sprayed at the Neo-Nazi Rally in valley forge. Hurt like hell. <_<

yeah it was always a tough choice. Glasses could break and you could get cut from the glass/plastic. I'd rather take the contacts. It hurt like hell but they came out easy when flushed with water.

i think he meant loosening them up a bit before taking them out, sometimes when i fall asleep with contacts on i have to throw warm water into my eyes before being able to take them off cos theyre so dry

I just meant they came right out when flushed with water. I didnt have to touch them.

 I thought selling pepperspray was illegal? Where can I buy some, comrade? (Online shop if possible, since I live in Belgium)

Simon

Yes it's illegal in Belgium, but sometimes you read it in a newspaper that a person is sprayed etc... so it's not imposiblle

My dad owns a shop and my uncle bought him a few cans of pepperspray to put in his shop to spray at people who kept coming into the shop and causing trouble (it's more of a stall he works in the market), so it's not impossible to get but if my dad did spray someone in the eyes in England i'd expect he'd get into alot of sh!t.

Not sure about other countries, but in Canada we can buy bearspray.. it's like pepper spray but 10x stronger.. used when you're out in the wilderness to spray bears.. (hence the name). It's perfectly legal to have, although I'm sure using it wouldn't be looked upon happily. Easier to get than pepper spray though!

I wouldn't advise wearing contacts at all.

If you get CS in your eyes and a medic finds you they're gonna tilt your head back and squirt either 0.9% saline or 50/50 LAW into your eyes at as high a pressure as can be achieved by manually squeezing a bottle. With the right bottle the pressure is surprisingly high.

What has happened before when this has been done and the contacts weren't spotted prior to squirting is that the contact whipped round into the back of the eyesocket. Fucking painful and if it scratches the optic nerve you'll be at risk of further sight damage/loss.

If any kind of riot weapons start being used switch from contacts to glasses before the CS is deployed.

You can buy pepper spray in the form of 'dog repellent' at all army surplus stores (Canada).
Dog repellent is a lot better than bear repellent purely because the bottle is small, and generally fits concealed in your hand/pocket.

Bear repellent is massive!!!

I'm sort of a riot medic, (I go to protests with a messenger bag of medical supplies and when riot weapons start being used, I treat anybody who needs it)

But does anybody know what to do if you notice they have contact lenses on when you're trying to treat a CS contamination? Do you just take them out for them? I don't use contact lenses since I have no need for them so I don't know how.

Wouldn't it be safer if everybody just went with a bandana soaked in vingar and some sort of eye protection?

Organic Revolution
3rd December 2005, 22:11
it would be safer if people just got damn gas masks

please people dont post ideas of weapons

Vallegrande
4th December 2005, 05:32
There is really no mention of ideas to make weapons derived from capsaicin. Even if so, it is just common knowledge of what capsaicin can do to us.

Organic Revolution
4th December 2005, 05:35
eh people were talking about bringing pepper spray and shit

Vallegrande
4th December 2005, 07:19
I dont know if this has been tested or not, but if certain oils, when applied to the entire face, can prevent the burning of the spray. The only thing I tested on myself was putting a spoonful of coconut oil in my mouth, taking a clove of garlic, and chewing on it while I still have the spoonful of oil in my mouth. It really works at keeping the raw garlic from burning my mouth. I think I will try to test this on an habanero or cerrano pepper someday.

Organic Revolution
4th December 2005, 17:36
that will only work against peper spray.... tear gas will get trapped in the oil and burn like hell.

Chimera
6th December 2005, 18:52
Yeah NO OILS!!! If you can score some water-based sunblock use that.
