Where'd you get 600,00 & 1.8? Most things I've read say 300,000-500,000 at the anti-war march & 300,000 at this march.
And since when is that piece of shit Louis Farakhan left-wing? The guy's responsible for Malcolm's murder.
I'm not fan of Farakhan, but the shift in focus from personal issues (black men should not do drugs and should not have children out of wedlock) in the "million man march" to more overtly political issues, I think, is significant.
Like it or not, black nationalism and the NOI in particular still hold a lot of weight in black radicalism in the US. It's safe to assume that most people at the march wern't NOI members and the fact that so many people showed up and are connecting the dots of racism and Katrina should be encourageing for marxists.
A multi-racial anti-war movement along with an equally multi-racial reparations or civil rights movement would be preferable, but we participate and try and present a way forward for the movements we have, not the movements we want (spot the reference?). But seriously, both the anti-war and possible new civil rights movements are in the early phases as far as politics, but the fact that so many people want to be involved with movements to challenge the war and challenge the system's racism is a good sign.
