well, think they just called themself that way to gain votes...to gain power, to KILL THE COMMUNISTS... and eventually take all power in their country & try and take over the world - like pinky & the brain :D -
socialism is something of the masses... nazism also involves lots of people... they want to act "socialist" for THEIR group of white, blond & blue-eyed people...

They identified themselves as "socialist" to appeal to the working class who had been duped by the SDP into thinking that militarism is justifiable.

I think it was some way to appeal to alienated working class individuals (who was most of the population at the time) through raising nationalism and prejudices.

They had serious fighting going on with communists (which about all workers were at that time). They tried to integrade socialism into their ideology to gain workers support and take some of the drive against them. Well that didnt really work out cause the workers really didn't support them (obviously cause fashism is just the most exaggerated form of capitalism).

Why does the United States call itself a Republic or a Democracy, when it is in fact a Plutocracy?

not that simple
they called themselves national socialists because they mixed social programmes (which they did have!) with nationalism (blind obedience, brainwashing, racism)

One word: propaganda. It appealed to the masses. This was how the party started off, to lure in the workers, and as hitler gained more and more power, he was corrupted more and more and hated communism, especially stalin. From what was once an aliance with russia turned into one of the bloodiest battles in WW2: Stalingrad, (which russia of course won)

well what social programs are you refering to? actually the nazis did only improve the situation of big business not of the working class.

Hitler was nerver for the working class and he always hated communism. the non aggression pact between the CCCP and Nazi Germany was just a tactical mindplay between hitler and stalin they both wanted to trick each other. for more information read "Hitler and Stalin" its a real good book with lots of good researched information

building of the great german highways, thereby creating jobs.
the nazis implemented a programme so that workers could go on holidays abroad.

The banner of National Socialism was raised by upstarts from the lower and middle commanding ranks of the old army. Decorated with medals for distinguished service, commissioned and noncommissioned officers could not believe that their heroism and sufferings for the Fatherland had not only come to naught, but also gave them no special claims to gratitude. Hence their hatred of the revolution and the proletariat. At the same time, they did not want to reconcile themselves to being sent by the bankers, industrialists, and ministers back to the modest posts of bookkeepers, engineers, postal clerks, and schoolteachers. Hence their "socialism." ---Leon Trotsky from What is National Socialism

Oooh..
Can I get that one.
Because he wanted people to move there, because he wanted to be a ruler and have lots of underlings.
Why is Iceland Iceland?
Because Hrafna-Flóki saw lots of glaciers, and all his animals died so he was pissed at the country and decided to call it Iceland.

Actually it is that simple, their full name was the National-Socialist Workers Party, are you saying they had "workers programs" too?
Also, every party has social programs like the Nazis had, even the republicans in the US, they don't call themselves "socialist".

It was something else before Hitler entered it, but he gave it the long name-
National Socialist Germen Worker's Party.
The best theory is that parties with the words "Socialist" and "Workers" got the most votes.
