Popular music is the only genre of music that will never get stale. Every other genre, metal, rock, indie, reggae, folk is static. It conforms to certain genre principles in order to fit into it's own genre niche. By doing this is becomes static, and no longer progresses in such a way that makes it possible for it evolve.
Modern rock music has become a throw back to everything that has happened before, combing punk, beatles, stones, anything just heaven forbid a piece of originality. Metal music is just a parody of itself.
Pop music though, it constantly evolves, old fads die, are replaced by new fads, which in turn die, pop music constantly evolve. 3 years ago it was all about boy bands, then pop punk now it's r'n'b and garage. Every other scence is dead.
Music is dead. Long live Pop.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I fuckin hate pop music. the people who decide what pop music is don't know shit about music. Record producers just look for what thoses people will listen to for five minutes and then they're onto another fad.
I listen to as many styles as I can and sometimes they become pop, but bands who are pop from the beginning usually suck.
I mostly agree with you about rock and metal (especially metal) but it might be reformed someday. Even if it isn't, I'll still listen to the old stuff it'll always be good. I've been listening to alot of progressive rock now (new and old) and its becoming my rock lifeboat.

Pop doesn't change either. Crappy generic beats with semi good singers singing about a bunch of things that are shallow and don't matter at all. Nothing deep about it, nothing life changing, nothing moving. There's no passion in it. It's all just a copy and conglomerate of genre sampling and stupid people by into it. Like Emo, emo is Pop because its fake punk, having generic musical arrangements singing shitty songs about girls. And the saddest part is, people by into it thinking they are hardcore and getting a good taste of "the rebel music" or punk. Pop has no originality, it copies. While it's true that rock has gotten really stale lately, I'd rather remember rock for what it was, and not be concerned that it lost its originality. The Beatles were great. Queen was great. Nirvana was great. Accept them for what they are. Nothin is permanent, except for when you keep recycling the same old crap so much that people eventually buy into it (POP).

Yeah metal is kinda dying hence why I hate the new stuff a bit. If they went back to GOOD riffs, UNDISTORDED leads, and actual screamers ( like Axl, Sebastian, Rob, and that sort) who are new it would actually be good again.

Natrually, I disagree with the metal thing, but yes - pop will never die. Pop is not a genre, therefore it is not definable musically.
Pop is just what is popular, be that watered down metal, punk, rap, RnB, etc. Pop will never die, and the other genres will.
Pity, 'cos metal's just so good.

And the Xth re-packaged rock n roll liftestyle too crazy for the established society punk aren't?
Pop has no originality, it copies
Thus it survives by constantly evolving. Constant changing. Pop is progressive.

Thank you. Now I know what Emo is.
Also, if "pop" refers to what is popular at the moment, then pop music (now) is horrible.

Ilisten to a variety of music, some of it might be considered "pop" because of it's upbeat and "peppy" beat. But I wouldn'r consider it pop because it is not popular it is indie.

If you want good, quality, original pop then check out indie pop. The Unicorns are a great start. It's nothing britney spears, nothing justin timberlake, and definately not crappy Black Eyed Peas. It's pure goodness.

"Pop music" as in popular music. I think it exists and I don't know how you don't. Care to explain your reasoning?

Anything can be "pop music". The Ramones can be considered pop, Blondie can be considered pop, Christian Aguilera can be considered pop, Kraftwerk can be considered pop, Iron Maiden can be considered pop, Hendrix can be considered pop, the Sex Pistols can be considered pop, Dimmu Borgir can be considered pop, Wilco can be considered pop, Jethro Tull can be considered pop, all those shitty rappers can be considered pop, Nirvana can be considered pop, Franz Ferdinand can be considered pop, ABBA can be considered pop, anything can be considered pop.
If anything pop is a "state" but it's not a "genre". As you said yourself DN, "Pop music though, it constantly evolves, old fads die, are replaced by new fads, which in turn die, pop music constantly evolve". According to this logic, what we call "pop" now is not only different to what "pop" was 30 years ago but it also means that Britney Spears and the Sex Pistols are the same genre since they were both "pop" once (!).
"Evolves" doesn't mean "progresses" either. Just cause something is now it doesnt mean it's better, it just means that old artists ran out of "inspiration" and/or the media enforces other crap on the masses.
If anything "pop" is music which is "popular" (d'uh!) so what "pop" is depends on the media, the "fashion", the artists' inspiration, etc.
Therefore, "pop = genre" is nonsense. At east according to DN's original post's definition.

Interesting, so then why do people say they hate pop music?

Most people just see Pop music as "the scene" that stupid kids follow because they want to be accepted. Maybe not preppy but part of the same yuppie culture.
(Sorry for throwing around all these high-school labels around guys, it's just the only way I can describe it.)
