Another stupid question about politicians

This guy called Jesse Jackson JR, he is a democrat. Every left/right scale over american politicians says he is pure leftist. Since this is America (with another political perspective than Sweden), I am doubtful. How left is THIS guy?

Another thing I've came to notice: The term liberal could in America mean "leftist" or "libertarian left", and is often used in contrast to conservative (liberal/left, conservative/right), but I thought the "liberal" term had got to do with laissez-faíre, capitalist politics. Now, I am confused.

I've seen him classified as a Democratic Socialist, a rare few Democrats are, but wouldn't join any other party because they have no actual influence.

I know he is a member of the House's Progressive Caucus and there are some who claim the Progressive Caucus is part of the Democratic Socialists of America (mostly conservatives who want to scare people with the S word).

Well then, is Mr Jackson a good or bad guy ;)? I figure he's a good guy, on the politopia test he was just slightly more capitalist than me, and I consider myself to be VERY leftist. Check it out on www.politopia.com
