Ive been sitting in the train yesterday, reading the free "news paper" (a pile of propaganda and celebrity crap) while going to my university. And I see this tiny little "article" which claims that Chavez is trying to get a nuclear reactor from Argentina and that the US is very pissed off about this. This is of course followed by the usual lies that Chavez is a danger to democracy in South America etc etc.

However I havent been able to find a real article on this.

Anybody able to help me out?

Yeah....who the hell does Chavez think he is trying to buy a nuclear power plant to provide cheap electricity? Clearly a terrorist.

And what good is "democracy" if you live in the slums?

We all know if we look back at Latin American history that the US clearly has no interest in human rights or democracy. Fuck...they even recruited Nazi warcriminals to train terrorist groups to fight against any opposition the US might receive in their "backyard". But only when there are governments who are not loyal to them they will scream for human rights and democracy...very typical!

lol well given that he has a ton of oil for power it does seem a little suspect.

I want to see Bolivarian nuclear missles in Cuban bases!

It doesnt actually, I think Chavez too realises that the oil supplies will eventually run out, with this he is just trying to make sure that Venezuela will not purely be dependent on oil for energy.

This however does not mean that Venezuela is getting nuclear weapons ;)

is this true?

I hope so.

Sorry. It's not true.

Also, the vast majority of Venezuela's power is generated by hydroelectric dams.

This is another piece in the jigsaw of scaremongering about left-wing governments in S. America. A few months ago it was Brazil.

Energy Minister Denies Venezuela is Planning to Buy Argentinean Nuclear Reactor
http://venezuelanalysis.com/news.php?newsno=1782

By: Venezuelanalysis.com

Caracas, Venezuela, October 10, 2005—Responding to news reports that Venezuela is interested in purchasing a nuclear reactor from Argentina, Venezuela’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Rafael Ramirez, denied that this true. Rather, Venezuela is interested in training and research on nuclear technology, in cooperation with Argentina, as part of its existing cooperation agreements.

The report that Venezuela was interested in purchasing a nuclear reactor from Argentina originated with an AP summary of a news story in the Argentinean newspaper Clarín. According to this report, diplomatic sources had told the Clarín that the request had been made during a meeting last August 29. The reactor type, known as CAREM, is of medium capacity and would be used only for peaceful purposes.

Ramirez, making his comments to the press following a cabinet meeting, said, “there is no negotiation [for the purchase of a reactor]. There are agreements for scientific cooperation, that is, for technological exchange and research development. But there is no concrete agreement for the acquisition of anything having to do with the generation of atomic energy.”

Ramirez pointed out that Venezuela is indeed interested in nuclear technology, but only for training and for medical purposes. “Venezuela will bring itself up to date in the area of atomic energy,” said Ramirez.

According to Ramirez, Venezuela was one of the first countries of Latin America to have a nuclear reactor, which was a pilot reactor. Nuclear technology, however, was given little attention in the past few decades in Venezuela and now the Chavez government is interested in updating itself in this area.

Argentina and Brazil are both countries with advanced nuclear capabilities Ramirez reminded the press. According to DPA Argentina has exported reactors to countries such as Australia, Peru, Algeria, and Egypt.

Didn't that have some basis in the truth though? I'm fairly sure I read somewhere that Brazil once had a nuclear program

Nuclear energy means you can produce nuclear weapons.
Today's nuclear energy technology is almost foolproof.
If you want to get the yanquis to fuck off you need brutal nuclear missile tecnology!
Iraq had no serious weaponry therefore they were invaded.
Wake up comrades!

I don't think that's actually true that nuclear energy "means you can produce nuclear weapons".

Don't light water reactors use different methods and not produce weapons grade plutonium?

No...you are wrong here, if I remember correctly Venezuela also signed that treatie which says they are not allowed to produce nuclear weapons. Besides, if they would get those weapons they would have the US and Europe invading immediatly. And then what? Fire them off? Why start a nuclear war?

Of course it has. We have nuclear reactors for the production of electricity.

And any nonsense that URSB_Revolution may spout about "we are going through socialism, so we are building nukes" is either just nonsense, or a pro-imperialist provocation.

Understood, URSB?

Nuclear weapons, yeh that would be clever..... The U$ would have a hard time in venezuela i think. The resistance would be very stiff and very popular. Chavez bought 100 000 ak47s and has people out in the towns and villages teaching peasants ans workers guerilla warfare.

Nuclear Weapons are the dumbest thing. If one goes off they all do. If one goes off everybody dies. If Chavez was smart he wouldn't get nuclear weapons, and he isn't. Having nuclear reactors doesn't mean you can create nuclear weapons as they dont use weapons-grade plutonium.

In another thread, you said you were learning to make chemical weapons in school.

Iraq has just been invaded on false alegations of maintaining a chemical arsenal. Fostering the idea that our country also has, or strives to have, chemical weapons, is either a juvenile stupidity or a pro-imperialist provocation. I hope it is the former, but I am keeping an eye on you. More treasonous bullshit, and I will report you as a troll and get you banned from here. Understood?

Well officially Iraq was attacked because they "had" weapons of mass destruction
